Could Your Junk Food Be Making You Depressed?

Could Your Junk Food Be Making You Depressed?

A new study shows that junk food may have effects beyond expanding your waistline and upping your sodium levels -- it might also be sabotaging your mental health.

A new study in the journal Public Health Nutrition shows that regularly eating commercial baked goods -- including doughnuts and croissants -- as well as fast food -- pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs -- is linked with an increased depression risk.

Researchers from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada found that the people who regularly eat these foods are also more likely to be more sedentary, smoke, eat other not-so-nutritious foods and work 45 or more hours a week.

"Although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being," study researcher Almudena Sánchez-Villegas said in a statement.

The study included 8,964 people who didn't have depression (and weren't taking any antidepressant drugs) at the start of the study. Their depression statuses and diets were tracked for an average of six months.

At the end of the study period, 493 people were depressed or were taking antidepressants. The researchers found that the ones who ate the most junk food were 51 percent more likely to develop depression, compared with people who ate the least of these foods.

The Mayo Clinic reported on a previous study also showing a similar link. That study showed that people whose diets are high in fried foods, processed meats, desserts and high-fat dairy had an increased risk of depression symptoms, compared with people who eat lots of fruits, veggies and fish.

And earlier this year, a study in the journal PLoS ONE showed that there may be a link between eating trans fats -- common in a lot of junk foods -- and being irritable and aggressive.

The researchers of that study, from the University of California, San Diego, found that greater trans fats intake seemed to predict whether a person was more aggressive. The finding held true even after taking into account factors like sex, age and ethnicity.

Brooke's Weight Loss: 'Life Itself Is Such A Precious Gift'

Brooke's Weight Loss: 'Life Itself Is Such A Precious Gift'

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Brooke Mennella
Age: 14
Height: 5'0"
Before Weight: 194 pounds

How I Gained It: I struggled with my weight my entire life. I weighed in at almost 200 pounds at the age of 12. I gained the weight due to the peer pressure and stress of public school. I was never able to fit in with my classmates. I was picked on constantly, and I would turn to food for comfort. I was embarrassed of my body, so I would take my super-long hair and cover myself with it. I was not physically active, because I was so heavy and did not want to do anything. It was a struggle for me to even move. I hated to walk or even get up from the chair.

Breaking Point: I could no longer stand my classmates being so cruel to me. The girls were catty and picked on me constantly, and I even encountered death threats. My parents were afraid for my safety, and put me in an online accredited academy. My family and I were also scared for my health; I couldn't live to be 200 pounds without any complications. My mother signed me up for a gym and got me a personal trainer.

How I Lost It: I enjoyed working with the personal trainer and attending Les Mills and Zumba classes. Every time I walk into the gym I push myself to my limits. I enjoy every second of it. I also eat a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet to stay in shape.

This weight loss has changed me to a whole new person. I cut my hair, replaced my glasses with contacts and possess a whole new outlook on life. Life itself is such a precious gift, and people need to know they have to incorporate diet and exercise into their daily habits.

We all have to start somewhere, and we should make small changes at first. Keeping fit is something that should be done no matter of age and how much a person weighs. If I can do it at the age of 12, so can other people, regardless of their age.

After losing the weight, I have a strong inner drive to help inspire other people. I struggled with my weight my entire life and finally was able to change. I am finally happy with the way I look and feel deep inside my heart.

I have written a detailed book documenting my weight loss, tips and nutritional planning. I am presently looking for a publisher. I want to help anybody I can. I want to one day be a Zumba and Les Mills instructor, and a personal trainer, so I can help kids and teens loose weight. I want to inspire kids like me and help deliver the success that I achieved.

After Weight: 104 pounds

"Mudcats" (Thu., 10 p.m. ET on History) star Marion Kincaid is no stranger to wrestling massive catfish out of the depths, but on Thursday night's episode the fish planted one on Marion, hitting him in the head. It also gave him a nasty bite on the hand.

However, in the end Marion triumphed over the leviathan and took it to the weigh-in. Was it big enough to beat Skipper Bivins' whopper? Both fish weighed around 40 pounds, but Marion's tipped the scales at a few ounces more for the win.

Follow the race to the title on "Mudcats," every Thursday at 10 p.m. EST on History.

Leona Palmer: Farming 101: Growing Pains

Leona Palmer: Farming 101: Growing Pains

First of all, let me just say that farming hurts. I was sore everywhere for most of the last two weeks. My inner thighs and hamstrings took a particular beating, the former from a mere half-hour of squatting to harvest winter kale, and the latter from the everyday up and down of pruning, weeding and various chores. I wasn't exactly a spongey slob when I arrived, and I'm not looking forward to a painful transition into summer's full swing. I nipped my finger with the pruning sheers, scratched myself in a dozen places, scraped my knee and already managed a sunburn on the two days it was over 80 degrees. Also, I accumulated an impressive number of mosquito bites. My blood is apparently ambrosia to the little devils, and I've been assured of my popularity at bonfires this summer, since those close to me will be less appetizing.

Besides incorporating morning yoga to alleviate soreness, the answer seems to just toughen up and get over it. This is a good reminder that bodies are made to get hurt and then heal, to bleed (a little) and sweat (more than a little). I've had to inhabit my body in a new way, more practically and fearlessly, no longer a carefully-tended ornament of advertising. The split-second anxiety I noticed upon injury was not necessarily pain-related but a leftover body vigilance from modeling. You can't exactly show up on set covered in bandages and tan lines. As a final transition, I cut my hair and declared the door back to fashion closed indefinitely. My body, for better or worse, is now my exclusive concern and domain.

The farm has also been hurting in these first weeks. Our public farm stand at the end of the drive burned down. (Other fires were set in the area that evening.) We're rebuilding bigger and better, choosing to see the setback as an opportunity for growth and innovation (a lesson that is never easy, and mostly repeatedly learned). If you'd like to donate to our fundraising effort, there is a link on our homepage.

I was personally saddened when my little beets got hit with a fungus/mildew that causes "dampening off." The roots basically rot in the soil, and the top wilts to death. We're leaving the seedlings uncovered to lessen the humidity and increase air circulation. We've also put them out in the full sun on warm days, which seems to perk them up, and we've taken the precautionary measure of giving the rest of our seedling trays a bath in diluted bleach water before seeding further.

Germination of seeds is never 100 percent, but you'd like to believe that the germination of your seeds will be such, owing to your miraculously-green thumbs. However, our eggplant is spotty, our swiss chard came through a bit of a rough patch, and we've had to replant spots of cabbage and red onion. The good news is that the spinach looks marvelous, the tomatoes are promising, and the onions certainly have bounce. The greenhouse is finally turning "green" for the season.

Last week Joshua and Megan hooked up our irrigation system. This required an acetylene torch to heat and loosen the ground pipe fittings to then attach the pump, replacement ballvalves and handles on the various ground spigots and running the heater on the pump until danger of frost has passed. It all worked beautifully for about five days until the pump broke. This, on a weekend I was alone looking after the greenhouse, which then had to be watered by hand: the only mishap I've managed myself. It's being repaired in Lowell, and we ran a hose from the house in the meantime.

Finally, we have a beaver den in the culvert, which drains our fields. They were savvy enough to construct their dam where it is most inaccessible, under the middle of the road. I respect this as a nod to wildlife's suburban evolution, but it threatens a flood if there is heavy rain and has become a bureaucratic nightmare to remove.

Nevertheless, things progress smoothly. We seeded the parsley -- which likes a pre-soak for speedy germination, tomatoes, kohlrabi, basil (lime/lemon/thai), lettuce, chamomile, fennel, sweet peppers, hot peppers and scallions. I pruned and weeded the perennial herb beds, cleaned up the educational garden, and helped move the hoop house (a large greenhouse that held winter spinach and lettuce) onto fresh ground. I also rolled half-rotted bags of leaves insulating the base of the greenhouse away and transported them to mulch the orchard. Megan and Joshua maintenanced our ancient tractor, reorganized the tool shed, turned the compost and spread it on the berries and asparagus and checked the "remay" (large sheets of lightweight fabric used to protect early crops) for holes. One idyllic evening Megan burned the pruned applewood branches in our fire pit as Joshua sharpened tools, and I did nothing but enjoy the fragrant smoke -- until the mosquitos noticed me.

The first flowers have bloomed in bursts: Daffodils throw their sunny heads up to the sky, tiny, vibrant red stars cover the hazelnut tree, royal crocuses stand in groups, and the ground ivy, a brilliant indigo, has bloomed -- almost two months early. The rhubarb and asparagus are rising quickly, and the fruit trees are budding.

It hasn't gone perfectly, and we don't know what's around the corner, but we here at Newton Community Farm are better for it. Farming, I'm learning, is one part obstacle course, one part adventurous labor camp, and two parts planning, guesswork, and abrupt problem-solving. After all that there's nothing left but to just roll with the punches and enjoy the miracle of life happening all around you. Not a bad recipe for life off the farm, as well.

Judith J. Wurtman, PhD: If Your Spouse Snores, Will You Gain Weight?

Judith J. Wurtman, PhD: If Your Spouse Snores, Will You Gain Weight?

I bumped into a friend at a neighborhood coffee shop a few mornings ago. Normally she drinks a skim milk latte, but this morning her coffee was laced with chocolate and topped with a cushion of whipped cream. As we sat down to drink our coffee, she bit into a giant piece of coffee cake.

"I can't stop eating," she said between mouthfuls. "And I know it's because I haven't slept in three nights. Tom [her husband] has a cold and snores all night like an erupting volcano. Our house guest is in the spare bedroom, so there is nowhere I can go to get away from the noise. My willpower is shot. I think I gained five pounds in the last three days."

Although snoring spouses have not made it onto the list of common causes of weight gain, sleeplessness, whether caused by a noisy bed partner, 3 a.m. anxiety, jet lag, or shift work may have a disastrous effect on eating. Anyone who has endured even a few nights of restricted sleep knows this. The overwhelming fatigue and fuzzy-headedness that accompanies too few hours of sleep can induce a feeling of helplessness when confronted with tempting foods. The willpower, the motivation to stay on a diet, and the guilt at not staying on track can all disappear.

"I can't help myself," my client, who was a new associate in a large law firm, complained. "Sometimes I get only three or four hours sleep because of my workload, and I keep stuffing food in my mouth. I could not even tell you what I eat, except that it is probably chocolate, cookies and potato chips."

Many research studies have placed a scientific foundation beneath the countless anecdotes about sleep deprivation and overeating, especially among people suffering from chronic sleep deprivation, such as shift workers. Now there is new evidence on how the brain may be involved in the overeating following lack of sleep. According to a paper published in the April issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by St-Onge, McReynolds, Trivedi, et. al, brain activity in the areas associated with reward and pleasure changed after sleep deprivation.

In this study, volunteers spent six days sleeping their normal nine hours a night, and six days sleeping only four hours a night. After each phase of the study, the researchers presented the volunteers with pictures of tempting foods and then measured brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The reward and pleasure areas of brains became active following the period of sleep restriction, but not when the volunteers slept normally.

These results may explain why my friend consumed 500+ calories of whipped-cream topped coffee and cake that morning. Perhaps her brain was telling her to do this, and neither her willpower nor self-discipline could help her defeat the activity of her sleepy brain pushing her toward these poor food choices.

The researchers didn't actually measure food intake per se, or whether it shifted from healthy to unhealthy foods when the volunteers were sleep deprived. But of course, all of us who have suffered from sleep deprivation know what the answer would have been had the measurements been made. If you can't have good sleep, then "feel good" food is often the next best substitute.

The obvious solution is to get more sleep, but this seems to be unattainable for many Americans. The next best solution is to figure out how to prevent the brain from pushing unhealthy but yummy food choices onto the sleepy eater. This means overcoming the brain-generated impulse to eat fatty foods like fried chicken, bacon cheeseburgers, French fries, pizza, or doughnuts.

Normally we try not to give in to our impulses; we don't walk out of museum with a Monet tucked under our arm because we like water lilies or run a red light just because there are no cars on the street. But the impulses to eat the wrong foods are harder to resist. Giving in to an irresistible treat is not going to put you in jail or provide a moving violation ticket. The weight gain won't show up for a few days anyway, and you still may be too sleepy to care.

But if chronic sleepiness is unavoidable, weight gain will also be unavoidable unless strategies are put in place to control the impulse to overeat.

The simplest strategy is to remove oneself from temptation. Have a friend order your coffee so you won't stand at the counter wondering how many doughnuts you should buy. Avoid the snack aisles in the convenience store, or don't go into those stores at all since most of the shelf space is occupied by foods you really should not be eating.

Bargain with yourself. If your brain is demanding something sweet or crunchy, substitute low or fat-free snacks for the more obviously fattening ones. Barbecued rice crackers may not taste quite as good as barbecued potato chips, but they have far fewer calories. Cherry Twizzlers don't have the mouthfeel of chocolate, but they last longer in the mouth and are very low in fat. A chocolate, whipped cream mocha confection tastes wonderful, but a large coffee with frothed skim milk and a sprinkling of brown sugar and cinnamon on the foamed milk will save you hundreds of calories, unnecessary fat, and still give you caffeine.

Exercise. Even a few minutes of intense physical activity can help drive the impulse to overeat out of your system. By elevating your body temperature, increasing oxygen flow through your brain, and sweating, your sleepiness can diminish, and so will the impulse to overeat.

Nap for 10 minutes. If you can find the time, a short nap can refresh your mind and body and drive away eating temptations.

The perfect solution is restorative sleep. But until you are able to get enough sleep, try these suggestions. They may help.

As for my friend with the snoring husband... I wonder if she has tried wearing sound-blocking headphones?

Learn To Control Severity Of Back Pain

Learn To Control Severity Of Back Pain
Prolonged recurring back pain can be a big issue. It can of course keep you back from following your daily agenda and thus can be terribly tough to manage. But with right information and tips, it can be easy to control your back worries.

Prolonged recurring back pain can be a big issue. It can of course keep you back from following your daily agenda and thus can be terribly tough to manage. But with right information and tips, it can be easy to control your back worries.

Keep in mind that back stiffness is not something that you should ignore. This is particularly obligatory if you are certain that the agony isn’t because of any injury or strain that you have sustained in the last few days. Get in touch with a doctor if your back stiffness has lasted for at least 4 weeks. As unbelievable as it sounds, a typical cause of lingering back trouble is kidney problem. Kidney problems are often major enough for any person to go running to doctor.

A preliminary way to treat back stiffness is to put a pillow between your knees when you are asleep. As your legs stay at a raised position, it’ll provide a light stretch to your back providing relief from chronic back pain.

Rest is an oft ignored but very effective medicine for back stiffness treatment. Exertion and exhaustion over a period of time also causes back trouble among folks. Sustained durations of standing or extraordinary physical activity may result in this. Rest allows your body and muscles to relax making them less at the mercy of discomfort.

So as to reduce back pain, you want to learn to relax. Relaxing is not the same as only resting. Simply taking pressure away from your body physically can be named as resting. However relaxing is relieving the strain and stress in your mind. The best way to do this is just by closing your eyes and thinking of cheerful and non-stressful things in your life. This’ll help relieve the overall strain in your body.

Understand that low back trouble is a typical problem and may not need any treatment at all. Nearly everyone misses work or a crucial engagement due to back stiffness at some specific point during their life. In such cases it is generally neither heavy nor lasting. Most regular backaches relieve themselves in about six weeks time.

Back pain can be effectively chased away with cold and hot packs in a brief period. For a cold pack, simply slip one or two ice cubes into a chunk of socks and hold it against the concerned area. Alternate it with a heat pack like a hot water bottle or the like. Repeat the use of the same every Twenty minutes.

If you are looking for instant pain relief solutions then OTC pain relief medications are the real good option. Non Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs or NSAIDS works rather well by reducing inflammation and agony. Such OTC options are generally available and are reasonably effective. Such options could also have upsetting side effects. So use them sparsely.

Thus, fighting back stiffness isn’t that troublesome after all. You can use these straightforward recommendations to address the condition.

Importance of Good Diet and Nutrition

Importance of Good Diet and Nutrition
A good diet is important for a runner not only to maintaining good health, but also to promote peak performance. A workout or race can make or break by proper nutrition and hydration, and also greatly affects how runners feel, work and think. For the healthy runners a balanced diet should include these basics: carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Here are some basic guidelines for a healthy nutritious diet:

A good diet is important for a runner not only to maintaining good health, but also to promote peak performance. A workout or race can make or break by proper nutrition and hydration, and also greatly affects how runners feel, work and think. For the healthy runners a balanced diet should include these basics: carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Here are some basic guidelines for a healthy nutritious diet:

Carbohydrates can deliver about 60 – 65% of total calorie intake. Without any doubt, carbohydrates are the most essential source of energy for athletes. It is proved by research that for both quick and long-lasting energy, our bodies work more resourcefully with carbohydrates than they do with proteins or fats. The excellent carbohydrates basics are whole grain pasta steamed or boiled rice, potatoes, fruits, starchy vegetables, and whole grain breads.

To repair tissue damaged and for some energy Protein is essential during training. Additionally to being an important nutrient, protein keeps you feeling full longer and it helps you if you’re trying to lose weight. About 15% – 20% of your daily intake can be making up by protein. Runners, especially those running long distances, should consume .5 to .75 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Low fat and low cholesterol protein foods are lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products, poultry, whole grains, and beans. Try to concentrate on those.

Runners don’t get energy from vitamins, but they are still an important part of their diet. Exercise may produce compounds called free radicals, which can damage cells. Vitamins C, E, and A are antioxidants and can neutralize free radicals. It is preferable to supplementation to get your vitamins from whole foods; there’s no strong evidence that taking supplements improves either health or athletic performance.

Try to make sure that no more than 20 – 25% of your total diet comes from fats because a high fat diet can rapidly pack on the pounds. Consume the foods that are low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Foods like nuts, oils, and cold-water fish offer necessary fats called omega-3s, which are essential for good health and also help to avoid certain diseases. Most experts recommend getting about 3,000 mg of omega-3 fat a day.

Learn to complete training for 5k beginner. This marathon training in 10 weeks will prepare yourself perfectly with training PGs.

Tony Phillips: Amazing Amputees and Limb Loss Awareness Month

Tony Phillips: Amazing Amputees and Limb Loss Awareness Month

If you've never heard of Oscar Pistorius, you're forgiven. Until several months ago I hadn't either. Pistorius, a 25-year-old South African dubbed "the fastest man on no legs," was born without fibulas and in his early childhood underwent amputation of both legs below the knee. Six months after surgery he was fitted with his first pair of prosthetic legs and within days he had them mastered. Years later, while playing rugby with his two-legged teammates for Pretoria Boys High School in 2003, he shattered a knee and was advised by his doctors to take up track and field to aid in his rehabilitation. Rugby's loss has been the track world's unique and priceless gain.

What can one say about a double-amputee with a personal best time in the 400 meters of 45.07? Pistorius' personal record is less than two seconds off Michael Johnson's nearly 13-year-old world-record mark of 43.18, and with eight years of track experience, Pistorius is showing no signs of slowing down. In July 2011 he posted his 45.07, a qualifying Olympic Games 'A' standard mark for able-bodied athletes. He subsequently ran a 45.20 this year to win a race at the South African Provincial Championships. By Olympic standards, he's fully qualified to participate in this summer's London Games. Here's a video of the world's fastest amputee in action at the 2011 IAAF World Championships.

There is no word yet whether South African organizers will select Pistorius to represent the country either as an individual entrant in the men's 400 meters or as part of its 4x400 relay team, but should he represent his country, he will be the first amputee to compete alongside able-bodied athletes in an Olympic Games and boy howdy do I hope that happens!

I mentioned that I've only known of Oscar Pistorius for a matter of months. There's a reason for that. I haven't until now thought my blog at the Huffington Post was the proper place for me to mention this, but last October I was diagnosed with a particularly nasty sarcoma of the bone, a condition for which my right leg was amputated just above the knee. I can tell you there's nothing fun about cancer. Neither is there anything fun about losing a limb or about a six-month course of chemotherapy. It has been a struggle that I'd have given up on many times by now if not for the constant and profound support of my wife, an amazing family and the world's best network of friends. Right leg or no right leg, I'm the luckiest man alive.

I can tell you that my treatment is proceeding with the admiring approval of my oncologist and my surgeon. No tests so far have shown any sign of metastasis and the prognosis for me is that I will live a very long and happy life, albeit with a significant body modification. I'm not worried and I don't think I should be. I had cancer. I don't anymore.

But, grumble, I do not yet have a prosthetic leg. There's a story to that but I'm not free to discuss it, not here, not anywhere. I'll write of it someday probably, but not now. All I will say now is that I am an individually insured self employee and the laws that govern individual and family healthcare policies in the State of California do not require those policies to cover prosthetic limbs as a standard benefit for customers. It's entirely possible, indeed probable, that hundreds of thousands if not millions of Californians have insurance plans that will cover the removal of their limbs but not their replacement with artificial facsimiles and that, sez me, is ri-god-damn-diculous.

No matter. Although it took some creative problem solving, I'm a very lucky man and within a few weeks time I'll be wearing the latest and coolest fake leg there is. My new knee will include a microprocessor that calculates pitch, yaw, roll, orientation, direction and momentum at something like 70 computations a second. I'm 46. I'm pretty sure the beaten-down old natural knee they cut off me was performing calculations with an abacus. Felt that way anyhow.

Of course even with a new leg, which is going to be some wicked cool cyborg awesomeness, I'm halfway to decrepit and I shan't ever run the 400 meters maybe period, much less in world-class time. I also won't ever do what Marine Corporal Garrett Jones did, which is to lose most of his right leg to a roadside bomb in Iraq and a year later, with a prosthetic limb, return to active combat duty in Afghanistan. There's heroism and then there's something for which words are too feeble and if you're not inspired by Garrett Jones, you're dead.

I won't ever do many things that some of today's amputees can do because after all I'm still the ordinary guy I was before I lost my leg. Still, I'm proud to count myself a member of a community that includes such people as Pistorius, Jones, Bethany Hamilton, the champion surfer who lost an arm to a shark at the age of 13, or any one of thousands of extraordinary amputees who prove daily the power of the human spirit to overcome physical challenges.

Nevertheless, while I'll never reach the level of physical achievement set by such as those folks, there's one thing I can do -- I can darn sure get myself a bang-up casing for my new leg, thanks to the artistry and ingenuity of the people at Bespoke Innovations, developers of ultra-chic prosthetic 'fairings,' i.e. coverings for artificial legs. Either my wife's intuition about us winning the lottery needs to pan out or I need to finally finish a book project I've had on my plate for so long I'm ashamed, but one way or another I'm coming up with a few grand to get myself a fairing from Bespoke and if you check out this video from CNN you'll see why. That there's some straight-up Bladerunner coolness. [Word to the Bespoke gurus -- I may be broke, but I have no compunctions about shameless endorsement deals.]

There's a reason I've chosen to write about all this now and that is that the U.S. Senate currently has before it a bill, S.773, introduced through the advocacy of the Amputee Coalition, that would require insurers to provide parity under group health plans for the provision of prosthetics and custom orthotics. Such benefits to group members would not address cases like mine or any other individually insured Americans, but the bill is a step in the right direction. Nearly two million Americans living with the loss of one or more limbs would love it if you could encourage your senator to support that bill. We'd appreciate it even more if you could get the House to consider its own legislation on the subject.

In fact, there has never been a better time to get behind a measure that affects ordinary Americans like me as well as extraordinary ones like Corporal Jones because April, sure enough, is Limb Loss Awareness Month. I don't usually pay attention to national so-and-so months but this one hits kind of close to home. Sadly, Limb Loss Awareness Month, every bit as valid as some of the goofball months we all hear about, lacks a presidential proclamation to make it official. I know the president's a busy man, but surely he can take a few minutes to sign a proclamation request. It's not like he's being asked to designate April "Better Breakfast Month" -- that's September.

Maybe what Limb Loss Awareness month needs is a ribbon. All the good causes have ribbons. A friend of the Amputee Coalition's Facebook page submitted the below sample. I like it, but I don't know if it's as powerful as a presidential proclamation. By all means, wear the ribbon next month if you're so inclined. But if you think the president ought to get behind limb loss awareness, you can also let him know your thoughts and here's a link to help you get started.

On behalf of the two million, thank you.

Mad Men Returns Tonight: A Look At Terrible Health Ads Of The Past

"When you're hungry, it usually means your energy is down," reasons this ad from sugar manufacturers that was in circulation in the early 1970s. "By eating something with sugar in it, you can get your energy up fast." They advertised sugar as only 18 calories per teaspoon and "all energy." Of course, they neglected to mention that immediately after creating a surge of energy, unfettered sugar consumption leads to a blood sugar crash that triggers appetite and brings on fatigue.

How Daily Habits Can Have Big Health Payoffs

How Daily Habits Can Have Big Health Payoffs

My a.m. drink of choice is … green tea.

Wake up to a steaming mug of tea to ramp up the body's defenses against infection: A study from Harvard University reveals that the immune cells of tea drinkers responded to germs five times faster than those of coffee drinkers. And green tea, specifically, contains an antioxidant compound called EGCG which works with your immune system to ease inflammation. Add a squirt of lemon to up the ante. The juice contains quercetin, which also has anti-inflammatory powers.

Is This The Root Of India's Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis?

Is This The Root Of India's Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis India

A tuberculosis patient takes medicines at Directly Observed Treatment Short-course, run by non-government organization Navirman Samaj Vikas Kendra, on the outskirts of Mumbai, India, Monday, Jan. 16, 2012. Indian doctors have reported the country's first cases of "totally drug-resistant tuberculosis," a long-feared and virtually untreatable form of the killer lung disease.

NEW DELHI -- India's inadequate government-run tuberculosis treatment programs and a lack of regulation of the sale of drugs that fight it are responsible for the spiraling number of drug-resistant cases that are difficult to treat, health activists said Friday.

India adds an estimated 99,000 cases of drug-resistant TB every year, but only a tiny fraction of those infected receive the proper drugs to treat the stubborn disease through the government-funded program. Saturday marks World Tuberculosis Day.

The original form of the disease can be easily cured by taking antibiotics for six to nine months. But if that treatment is interrupted or the dose is cut, the bacteria battle back by mutating into a tougher strain that can no longer be killed by standard drugs making it harder and more expensive treatment.

The easy availability of TB drugs in the private market and the casual over-the-counter sale of antibiotics is fueling the development of drug resistance, Piero Gandini, head of Doctors Without Borders in India, said in a statement.

"There is an urgent need for regulatory control of sale and administration of TB drugs in the private sector," he said.

The organization and other health groups also said India's TB control program provides treatment to patients only on alternate days. They argue it increases the risk that patients, most of whom are poor daily wage laborers, will miss doses, another factor responsible for drug-resistant strains of TB.

Patients also increasingly turn to private doctors who often do not understand how to properly treat TB or the risks of increasing drug resistance by prescribing the wrong drugs.

The Indian government had no response Friday to requests for comment on the activists' allegations.

In January, Indian doctors reported the country's first cases that appeared to be "totally drug resistant," a long-feared and virtually untreatable form of the killer lung disease.

The Indian hospital that saw the initial cases tested a dozen medicines and none of them worked. However, the Indian government later questioned the findings, saying the World Health Organization has not defined the term "totally drug resistant" tuberculosis.

If a tuberculosis case is found to be resistant to the two most powerful drugs, the patient is classified as having multi-drug-resistant TB. An even worse classification of TB – one the WHO accepts – is extensively drug-resistant TB, a form of the disease that was first reported in 2006 and is virtually resistant to all drugs.

An estimated 20 percent of the world's multi-drug-resistant cases are found in India, which is home to a quarter of all types of tuberculosis cases worldwide.

10 Overhyped Health Products

10 Overhyped Health Products

You see these items on store shelves and on TV, but don't buy into the hype. These 10 over-the-counter products aren't always worth your money—and some can cause health problems instead of treating them.

Redness-reducing eye drops

Even if you look like you have the world's worst hangover, avoid using these drops on a regular basis. They can mask an underlying problem, like dry eye, allergies, or contact lens irritation, and trigger persistent redness because your eyes can get used to them, says Mark Melrose, an emergency physician and owner of Urgent Care Manhattan.

What to use instead:  "The first thing you should do is find out why you have the red eyes and treat the [underlying] reason," Melrose says. Your doctor can help pinpoint the problem. (Dry eyes can benefit from saline eye drops, for instance.)

Best Diets Overall

Antibacterial hand soap

About 75 percent of liquid hand soaps have antibacterial ingredients, but you can wash your hands of them. Outside of healthcare settings, antibacterial-containing products have not been proven to prevent the spread of infection better than regular varieties, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "The body does a pretty good job of taking care of itself," says Melrose. Plus, not all bacteria are harmful.

What to use instead:  Plain soap and water "does the trick just fine," says Melrose. Lather up for at least 20 seconds, scrubbing between your fingers and under your nails, then rinse and dry.

Toothbrush sanitizers

We have hundreds of different types of germs in our mouths, and because toothbrushes aren't sold in sterile packages, they can carry bacteria right out of the box, reports the American Dental Association (ADA). But—before you get too scared—know that toothbrush sanitizers haven't been shown to provide a health benefit, says the ADA. That's because a healthy body can usually defend itself against germs.

What to use instead: Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with tap water. Store it in an upright position and let it air-dry.

Best Heart-Healthy Diets

Breath-freshening mouthwash

If you're healthy, you don't need mouthwash unless your dentist has recommended or prescribed it for therapeutic reasons (say, for dry mouth).

What to use instead:  To fight bad breath and plaque, brush your teeth and floss twice a day, and see your dentist regularly, advises the ADA. But if you have chronic bad breath—and it's unrelated to your lunchtime love affair with garlic—talk to your dentist, says Edmond Hewlett, a professor of dentistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and an ADA spokesperson. Persistent bad breath can signal an oral health issue, he explains, like gum disease, tooth decay, or even something more serious, such as diabetes.

Facial toner

You may think you need toner—also called astringent—to remove makeup and reduce pore size, but you can probably do without it. "Facial toners are designed to restore the pH of the skin after cleansing," says Patricia Farris, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine. (Disrupting the skin's pH upsets its natural balance and causes irritation and dryness.) "But if you use a gentle cleanser that doesn't affect skin pH then you don't need a toner."

What to use instead:  Just a gentle cleanser or fragrance-free bar soap with no antibacterial additives, says Farris. One caveat: If you have exceptionally oily skin, it may be fine to use an alcohol-free toner, but most people really don't need it, she says.

Hillary Peterson: Poisonous Perfume? Revealing the Dangers of Fragrance

Hillary Peterson: Poisonous Perfume? Revealing the Dangers of Fragrance

Last week, I accompanied my mom to an appointment with her doctor who is supporting her through the challenges of a terminal illness. After the appointment, she went home and I walked around looking at skin care products -- which, as a manufacturer of skin care products, I often do. I entered a bustling, extremely popular Sephora store and I was met with a wall of perfumes, all made with synthetic fragrance. When I asked if they had many products in the store made without synthetic fragrance, I was told that they did not. As I watched consumers load products into their shopping baskets, on the heels of my sobering morning, I wanted to yell: "Doesn't anyone know how bad this stuff is for you!?" I was particularly unnerved because some fragrances have been shown to contain benzene, which has been linked to MDS, my mom's illness.

In 2010, the President's Cancer Panel published a report on cancer risks from chemicals. They concluded that: "The burden of environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated" and highlighted benzene, found in synthetic fragrance, as one of the more concerning substances.

The biggest problem with synthetic fragrance is that it is simply listed as "fragrance" or "parfum" on product labels, so one can never fully know the chemical make up of a certain product. Given the health concerns surrounding many of the chemicals found in fragrance, one has to ask, why? Is it really that important for a baby to smell "fresh" or for a teen to have hair that smells like a "tropical rain forest"? Even if it could contribute to asthma, eczema or even worse, cancer? And when we want a product to smell lovely, why not turn to essential oils vs. fragrance oils?

I had thyroid cancer in my early 30s and I have countless friends who have had cancer, including one of my best friends who lost her battle at 39. This leads me to ask, if there is a chance that multiple exposures to synthetic fragrance can compromise our immune systems, why do more people not know this and WHY are manufacturers not making more products without it? I appreciate that companies like Avon are fundraising to help find a cure for a terrible disease, I also think that we should demand that manufacturers of personal care products direct more energy toward prevention/creating safer products. Without research that more clearly shows a link between personal care products and illness, it has been easy for manufacturers to look the other way when it comes to prevention.

I saw an Avon ad the other day that asked: Are you in it to end it? My answer is positively YES. So Avon, can we start by taking fragrance out of your Naturals Kids products? Why would anyone put an ingredient associated with asthma, skin sensitivity and endocrine disruption into children's products? Avon is not alone. I am shocked by the number of products sold at our local Whole Foods that contain fragrance.

On Friday, a study released in Environmental HealthPerspectives revealed an alarming number of unlabeled chemicals of concern in commonly used household and personal care products. The study was funded by Silent Spring Institute, which had 213 consumer products independently tested by Battelle Labs for 66 specific chemicals associated with either endocrine disruption or asthma. The results indicate that manufacturers could do a lot more to make our products safer. Fragrance was specifically listed as a concern.

While many "walk for a cure," which I do think is worthwhile, I will also speak out for a more intelligent approach to manufacturing, which should include the exclusion of synthetic fragrance in all products. There is no logical reason for us to unnecessarily expose ourselves to toxins on a daily basis and we need to voice our concerns so that manufacturers know that we care.

Other areas, such as a family or job, may seem more important to you. The fitness ideas presented here may be of interest to you if you want to make your physical condition a priority again. They will help you get your teenage figure back.

Make sure to eat immediately after working out in order to maximize the effects of your workout. Shakes or smoothies make a great post-workout snack because you can vary the ingredients and supply the protein and nutrients that will aid in faster muscle growth. There are some wonderfully tasty and nutritional combinations you could try. For example cocoa powder, fruit and egg substitute. Make sure you eat as soon as you are done working out. You can build muscle quickly by consuming protein shakes after you finish working out. Make your protein shake with frozen yogurt, fruit and egg substitute. Try adding a little cocoa powder for an especially tasty treat.

Find a friend that is willing to commit to a workout plan with you; this will help you to stay focused on reaching your goals. The friend that you choose must be reliable enough to show up for workouts so you feel as though you cannot miss them either. Having a friend involved will also help give you the extra kick that you may need on the days that you do not feel motivated to work out. If you have someone to talk and laugh with, you’ll have more fun and want to work out longer. Often, enlisting the help and support of a workout partner can help you stick to your goals. You and your friend can encourage each other to exercise, and keep your workout appointments. Having a friend there will motivate you at the times you just don’t feel like exercising. Working out longer will be achieved by laughing and talking with a friend while you workout, and it can help you burn more calories than working out alone.

Exercise can help to reduce pain from menstrual cramps. Women produce more stress hormones during menstruation, so they feel pressure more easily. Working out can help relieve a lot of the anxiety and stressful feelings. It is also a natural way to help with bloating and other uncomfortable side effects of a woman’s menstruation. Menstruation can be remedied through exercise. The hormones involved in menstruation often cause stress. An effective antidote to high levels of stress and anxiety is exercise. Other symptoms, such as bloating and water-retention, are also soothed by exercise.

Stay focused on your goals in order to help you get the most out of your workout routines. There are many people who seek to gain muscle while getting rid of fat simultaneously. It isn’t possible to lose weight while building muscle. When you know what you want you can decide on the right program for you. Focusing on why you want to get fit is key to staying motivated. For example, do you want to get leaner or stronger? However, it is unrealistic to work on both of these goals at the same time. By knowing the things that you want, you will be able to find the perfect diet and workout program for you.

Physical benefits are just one advantage of better fitness. One of the benefits of having regular workouts is that you will be able to improve your emotional health. Exercising releases endorphins and makes you happy. Another benefit that exercise can give you is that you will be able to improve your self image and self-esteem. You are just a few workouts from being truly happy! Better physical condition is only one of the things a fitness program can achieve. A healthy fitness regimen will actually help to improve your emotional health. Endorphins are released from exercise, and they cause a euphoric state. Of course your confidence is also enhanced as your self image improves, and this will occur the more you work out. When you exercise regularly, you can find happiness in many ways.

If you want to improve your fitness levels do not hurry through your workouts. When lifting weights, try slowing your contraction phase. When you take ten seconds instead of two per repetition you will see improvements more quickly. Improvement will start being apparent within six weeks. Proceed slowly if you want to improve your fitness level over time. Slow down during the contractions of weight training. Change the time it takes to do each lift from two seconds to ten seconds, and you will see some drastic improvement! If you use this technique for six weeks, you should start seeing the benefits.

If you are someone who wants to be in shape, read these tips and find out how easy it can be. All you really need is some time, patience and determination to get it done. These tips work out in life and in your physical work out. If you can do this in your exeryday life, you can do it in a work out. Stop wishing, and make it happen! As these tips demonstrate, getting fit is not necessarily the challenge you thought it was. As with everything, it will take some planning, some persistence and some patience. Moms of Kids With Autism Earn How Much Less?

Moms of Kids With Autism Earn How Much Less?

It has long been known that parents of children with autism face particular financial strains, but researchers have now taken a first stab at quantifying the exact toll it can take on their income.

The study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, finds that families of children with an autism spectrum disorder earn 28 percent less than families whose children have no health problems, and 21 percent less than parents of kids with other health limitations.

And mothers' earnings are even harder hit.

Women whose children have an autism spectrum disorder make 56 percent less than moms whose children have no health problems, and 35 percent less than those whose kids have other health issues. They tend to leave the work force altogether, or take lower paying jobs and work fewer hours.

"A lot of times, research is to tell us what we already know. If you say this to any mother of a child with autism, they know this is happening," said David Mandell, a researcher for the study at the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania. "I don't think this is any kind of news for those families."

Perhaps not. But according to the study's authors, it is among the first studies to go beyond the system-level costs of autism and focus on the burden that can accompany changes in parental employment.

To do so, researchers relied on the 2002-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, which tracks cost and utilization of health services in the U.S. They compared data from parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder to parents of children with another health limitation, as well as parents of children without.

Overall, mothers of children with autism were 6 percent less likely to be employed than mothers of kids with no health problems, and worked an average of seven fewer hours per week.

The existence of a wage gap between working women with and without children has been well-established, with estimates ranging from two to nearly 14 percent lower wages for those with children. In a recent interview with NPR, economist Kate Krause, who has researched the issue extensively, said that could stem from a variety of factors, including women taking lower paying jobs that allow them more time with their children or getting less education because they anticipate staying home.

But the new study emphasizes the particular toll that parenting a child with autism can take on women's earning potential.

"What this study shows is that the mother is the one that often times has to cut back significantly, or even completely to care for a child with autism," said Peter Bell, executive vice president for programs and services at Autism Speaks, one of the nation's largest autism advocacy organizations.

"They end up having to coordinate support form various services," Bell continued, explaining that his organization has pushed for insurance reform efforts at the state and federal level to provide broader coverage for autism therapies. "The children might have to attend a lot of different therapy sessions -- oftentimes they're in the home, or they have to go to speech or language sessions. It really becomes a full-time job."

Mandell told The Huffington Post that he had hypothesized that the research might uncover some kind of compensation on the part of fathers, who would chose or be forced to work harder, longer hours and perhaps earn more money, but that was not the case. The research uncovered no significant differences in paternal earnings among the three groups.

Overall, families of children with no health limitations earned nearly $18,000 more per year than families of children with autism.

"People talk a lot about the cost of treating autism, and they're mostly talking about the healthcare and educational costs," Mandell said. "What this study gets at is 'What's the cost of not treating autism?' 'What does it cost families?' That is what this shows."

Doctors' Newest Tool: The iPad?

Doctors' Newest Tool: The iPad?

By Genevra Pittman

NEW YORK, March 12 (Reuters Health) - When doctors-in-training at the University of Chicago were given iPad tablet computers to use on their rounds, they found that using the device helped them be more efficient at ordering tests and procedures for their patients.

The study from the university program, published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine, tracked 115 residents who received devices purchased by the hospital. There was no funding reported from Apple Inc, which makes the iPad.

Most residents who used the devices to access patient records and coordinate their care said they cut about an hour per day off their workload. Researchers also found that the internal medicine trainees tended to put in orders for patient procedures earlier than before they got an iPad.

"What's happening to medicine now is it's very data-driven, and a lot of the data is being put into computers and the computers aren't at the (patient's) bedside," said Dr. Bhakti Patel, the study's lead author from the University of Chicago.

"A lot of people are feeling that they can't spend a lot of time at the bedside because they're kind of shackled to the computer," she told Reuters Health.

The researchers didn't test the iPads against any different devices, such as other brands of tablets or smartphones. Patel said that other medical training programs might consider varying types of devices, depending on what fits their needs.

After a first try of giving a few residents iPads went well, Patel and her colleagues handed the devices out to all 115 of their internal medicine doctors-in-training in late 2010.

The iPads allowed residents to see patients' electronic health records, to contact the hospital laboratory or other departments if they needed tests done and to show patients their own x-rays and other test results, as well as access medical journals.

A few months into using the iPads, Patel's team surveyed the residents and found that almost four out of five said they were more efficient on the wards with the devices, and 68 percent said they avoided delays in patient care by using them.

Compared to before they got the tablets, the residents put in the same number of orders for tests and procedures for their patients, but slightly more of those were placed within two hours of a patient's hospital admission.

The devices cost the program about $650 each, including insurance and software.

"Clearly this is demonstrating a new trend in integration of personal computing devices with the electronic health record," said Yan Xiao, from the Baylor Health Care System in Dallas. Xiao said his personal views don't represent those of his institution.

"There's a lot of interest in using the iPad, not only by residents but by nurses and others - and also other devices like the Android," said Xiao, who has studied those trends but wasn't involved in the newly published research study. SOURCE:Archives of Internal Medicine, online March 12, 2012.
