'Female Genetic Fault' Causes Higher Rates Of Bowel Cancer In Men

'Female Genetic Fault' Causes Higher Rates Of Bowel Cancer In Men

Men may have higher rates of bowel cancer because of a female genetic fault, research suggests.

Scientists identified an alteration on the female X chromosome, one of the packages of DNA that determine gender, associated with bowel cancer.

The fault appears to be involved in the development of cancer in both men and women. But it may have a bigger effect in men, say the researchers.

The defective X chromosome region is linked to reduced activity of a gene called SHROOM2 that controls how cells develop and take shape.

Women have two X chromosomes, so if one has the fault the other normally functioning version may mask it.

But this would not apply to men, who have just one X chromosome paired with a male Y chromosome.

Professor Richard Houlston, one of the scientists from from the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said: "To our knowledge, this is the first time that anyone has shown that one of the sex chromosomes is involved in the development of a cancer that can afflict both sexes. This may help explain why bowel cancer is slightly more common in men. Ultimately, it could also help us target screening to those who are more at risk of the disease."

The study, reported in the journal Nature Genetics, also uncovered two other genetic risk variants for bowel cancer, bringing the known total to 20.

The scientists analysed data from five international studies looking for single letter changes in the genetic code (single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs) linked to bowel cancer.

A second variant identified was in a gene called CDKN1A which governs a number of tumour suppressing biological pathways.

The third affected a gene called POLD3 which influences two pathways that repair DNA damage.

Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK affecting 41,000 men and women each year.

Dr Lesley Walker, from the charity Cancer Research UK which funded the study, said: "This research shows how a range of genes could be behaving in bowel cancer, potentially leading to new treatments for the disease."

Our Tricks Meant For Superior Bicep Exercises: Two Strategies That Actually Work

Our Tricks Meant For Superior Bicep Exercises: Two Strategies That Actually Work
Most people who use resistance training just want to maximize lean muscle mass, look better, and also feel good. From time to time however, men and women will run into barriers in accomplishing his or her objectives, specifically when you are considering the biceps. This particular muscle group is located in the upper aspect of the arm between the shoulder and elbow. There's two distinctive heads, the outer and inner head. What many people fail to realize is that there can be unique bicep exercises they could engage in to successfully concentrate on the two areas of the muscle group.

There’s two distinctive heads, the outer and inner head. What many people fail to realize is that there can be unique bicep exercises they could engage in to successfully concentrate on the two areas of the muscle group.

One of many techniques available for use is the strategic positioning of the hands and wrists. When the bulk of individuals accomplish bicep exercises, many of them have the hands around the hip area and exactly aligned with the shoulders. This location is okay at targeting both heads in the bicep however, if you need to focus on one more clearly when compared with the other, the positioning of the hands can come in in the direction of one’s body or even out and away from the body. Just go ahead and consider it this way: the wrists and hands shall be much closer as opposed to shoulder width apart or further away than shoulder width apart, by using this method, the emphasis of the exercise adjusts. If your wrists and hands are more near, it’s going to concentrate on the outer head of your bicep more. With your hands even further, it will pinpoint the inner head a lot more.

Another approach for rendering bicep exercises more effective are only able to be utilized utilizing dumbbells. Lift the weight load just like you ordinarily would however when the weight is lowered and the arm is lengthened, rotate the wrists, subsequently turning the weights toward one’s body, afterward send them back towards the regular hand placement and raise the weight up. This rotation action ought to be conducted carefully and also with excellent control. As a bonus, not only does it target the outer head of the bicep a whole lot, you’ll find it calls for for your forearms to be engaged much more.

The last tip for boosting ones biceps will be to mix up the way you actually clutch the bar that you are using. You’ll find three methods, pronated (overhand), supinated (underhand), and neutral (in between). The pronated hand position engages the outer head a great deal more, the supinated grip engages the inner head more, and the neutral grip is perfect for targeting the lower aspect of the two heads. All of these variations of bicep exercises can all be carried out utilizing dumbbells nevertheless you must have a special barbell to execute all of them a neutral grip.

These particular tricks are only supposed to get you going in the correct route. It’s usually up to you to make yourself do something, eat nutritious food, and not to mention, lift weights!

The aforementioned bicep exercises truly do work. I dare you to attempt them for a couple workout sessions and feel the difference.

SUNSCREEN 101: How To Choose It, Wear It And Keep Safe Under The Summer Sun

SUNSCREEN 101: How To Choose It, Wear It And Keep Safe Under The Summer Sun

Memorial Day rings in the summer season and, along with barbecue equipment, beach toys and sandals, stores are beginning to pad their shelves with sunscreen. That's a great thing: sun damage is responsible for 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers in the United States, itself the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, more than 3.5 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States.

“The risk of skin cancer is very real," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg said in a recent statement in support of the government's first annual "Don’t Fry Day" on May 25. “The FDA strongly recommends that consumers regularly use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen with an SPF value of 15 or higher in combination with other protective measures to more effectively protect themselves and their families whenever they are in the sun.”

But with so many options on store shelves -- not to mention an impending change in the way that sunscreens are labeled and rated -- selecting the appropriate sun protection can be a confusing endeavor. On the one hand, the block is essential to prevent the skin’s absorption of damaging sun radiation that can cause free-radical damage and lead to skin cancer and premature aging. But new research has suggested that some chemicals found in leading sunscreen brands can actually increase the risk of some melanoma skin cancers. So what should you do?

We asked top dermatologists for their tips on what to look for as you stock up on your summer sunscreen supply:

  • What Is Sunscreen Made Of?

Sunscreens follow one of two formulas. So-called "chemical free" sunscreens are made with a heavy metal -- usually oxidized zinc, though sometimes titanium oxide. Zinc and titanium sit on the surface of the skin, serving as a reflective, protective cover against damaging sun rays. Think of them almost like a giant reflector, says Dr. Darrell Rigel, Clinical Professor of Dermatology at New York University Medical Center. "They're just like a mirror, reflecting ultraviolet light off," he says. <br><br> The other type of sunscreen is typically made with the chemical Oxybenzone, and is referred to as "organic" or "chemical" sunscreen.

  • Are Chemical Sunscreens Dangerous?

Some people prefer chemical-free sunscreens to the more common lotions and sprays, made with Oxybenzone. That's because old research in rodents has shown a relationship between oxybenzone and melanoma, though the link is inconclusive and most accredited medical organizations <a href="http://www.skincancer.org/prevention/sun-protection/sunscreen/if-recent-attacks-on-sunscreen-concern-you" target="_hplink">do not consider it viable</a>. Additionally, oxybenzone is an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen -- a concern for many people who try to avoid synthetic hormones. <br><br> "Oxybenzone is one of the oldest and most used sunscreen ingredients in the world, having been in use since the 1970s, and to date there have been no human cases of hormonal disruption documented," says Dr. Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, founder of the Art of Dermatology in New York City, and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

  • Is One Type Better Than The Other?

While the cancer link to oxybenzone isn't clear, there are other reasons a person might not want to use a chemical-based sunscreen: first of all, they have a shorter half-life, according to Rigel. Their protection begins to degrade after two hours, compared to zinc-based lotions' eight hours. <br><br> But Zinc and titanium lotions are by no means perfect: because they sit on the surface of the skin, they are less resistant to water. Swimmers and other active people will have to reapply frequently. Additionally, as they degrade, the metals form clumps on the skin's surface -- this leads to patches of protected skin and patches without any protection at all. By contrast, oxybenzone-based creams degrade evenly. <br><br> One additional problem with zinc and titanium based creams? They don't look great. Especially for the dark complected among us, the metal formulas can leave a noticeable white coating. If aesthetics are a concern, a beachgoer may forgo the lotion altogether -- and that's the only form of unacceptible sunscreen: none. <br><br> "Honestly, the best sunscreen is whatever the patient uses," says Dr. Bobby Buka, a dermatologist in private practice in New York City. "I'm not going to fight the battle about formulation."

  • What SPF Do I Need?

While some sun lotions may offer SPFs as low as two, the general consensus is that, to be effective, a lotion must have an SPF of at least 15, though the American Academy of Dermatology recommends a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. "Remember this only applies to UVB coverage and requires sufficient amounts," cautions Krant.

  • Is UVA Protection As Important As UVB?

SPF applies only to UVB rays, but we now know that UVA rays can be just as damaging -- and may be even more closely associated with premature skin aging. The new FDA label regulations require manufacturers to rate their UVA protection on a scale of five stars, but until those rules go into effect next year, make sure you look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet rays. <br><br> Though beware: broad-spectrum doesn't necessarily mean you're in the clear. As Rigel explains, companies need only provide a tiny amount of UVA protection to give their product that label. "What's really important is proportionality," he explains, and that's factored into the future labels, but not the current ones. Using the current labels, "you'd basically have to be organic chemists to figure it out," Rigler says. <br><br> Any label that discusses proportionality or the test used to arrive at UVA protection scoring, the critical wavelength test, may be the best bet.

  • Should I Use Waterproof Block?

There's no such thing as waterproof sunscreen. In fact, the new FDA guidelines will require that sunblocks reduce their claims to "water resistant," "water resistant 40" and "water resistant 80." The numbers connote how many minutes they are able to uphold protection after getting wet. Older bottles may still say "waterproof," but don't believe the hype. <br><br> If you're spending a great deal of time splashing around -- or you happen to sweat more than the average person, up your frequency of applications.

  • How Much And How Frequently Should I Apply?

Most recommendations suggest reapplying every two hours, because that's the point of degradation for oxybenzone-based sunscreens, which are the most common. But a zinc sunscreen can be applied every four, six or even eight hours, according to Dr. Bobby Buka. <br><br> However, as Buka explains, all testing of sunscreens is done at a higher concentration that we don't replicate on the beach, at two milligrams per square centimeter. Given that discrepancy, it's better to reapply more frequently -- and that's especially true for those who are sweating, swimming or otherwise exposing their skin to water. <br><br> The American Academy of Dermatology <a href="http://www.aad.org/media-resources/stats-and-facts/prevention-and-care/sunscreens" target="_hplink">recommends</a> using about one ounce (enough to fill a shot glass) to cover all exposed parts of the body, though that should be adjusted based on size.

  • Do I Really Need To Wait 20 Minutes After Applying For My Sunscreen To Work?

Sometimes. Oxybenzone-based sunscreens need that long to penetrate the dermis and become active. But if you're wearing a barrier sunscreen like zinc, you're ready to go as soon as you apply.

  • Are Sprays As Good As Lotions?

Yes. Sprays, lotions, oils -- whatever you truly use, as long as you are thorough, is a good product, agreed the experts. People who use sprays are slightly more likely to miss some spots, so Rigel recommends spraying two coats.

Arianna Huffington: The Moment I Knew I Needed More Sleep

Arianna Huffington: The Moment I Knew I Needed More Sleep

The moment I knew I needed more sleep was four years ago, when I learned the value of sleep -- the hard way. I'd just returned home after a week of taking my daughter on a tour of colleges, and the ground rule was no BlackBerry during the day, so I stayed up very late to catch up on work. Next thing I knew, I was laying on the floor, bloodied. I had passed out from exhaustion and banged my head on the way down. The result was a broken cheekbone and five stitches under my eyebrow. And it was also a wake-up call, leading me to renew my estranged relationship with sleep.

What was the moment you knew you needed to get more sleep? I want to hear your story.

Ellen Davis: Let's Look at What We Call the 'Mind'

Ellen Davis: Let's Look at What We Call the 'Mind'

The mind can be a great tool, which can also be misused, or overused and abused. The term "mind" is used in different ways. When I speak about "mind" here, I am using the more pejorative view of it that is often implied when we are talking about disciplining ourselves not to give into its unconscious, ego-driven, mechanistic functioning -- and I am speaking about it as differentiated from the "brain." I am not speaking about "higher mind," manomaya purusha, or that which breathes awareness from beyond preconceptions.

I am speaking about that which, in association with our sense of "me" and ego, functions through memory and imagination to protect whatever we have come to believe about who we feel we are or must be in order to survive or feel okay about ourselves. I am talking about the tension of thoughts that build on themselves habitually, seem not to know how or when to quit, and have little to do with presence, and I am talking about the thoughts that are believed as reality.

Back in the day when we had large animals around that could attack us, our "fight or flight" mechanism was appropriate. Yet, even when those kinds of real threats to our physical survival are no longer looming, we have become ever more sophisticated with our defenses and strategies towards self-protection. If we inquire deeply enough into who this "self" or "me" is, we might find that what we are feeling the need to protect is a fiction of our own making. Our reactions and the time we often obsess beefing up this idea of "me" and strategizing our defenses and insurance policies against imagined threats obscure a much more divine and creative intelligence that come through stillness and awareness that is prior to our conditions. Without this "me" that is defined by qualities and the comparative mind, we find that what looks out from experience is a presence with life as it is.

The unknown can be perceived as the largest threat because people often define themselves in relation to what they believe about the world around them. People will attach themselves to beliefs, manufacture supposed knowns (that may even come in the guise of "threats" and problems), or confabulate answers in order to placate their insecurities with the unknown and their own free-fall in not having a known to show them where they begin or end. This is when "mind" goes into over-drive, holding to attachments and grasping for what it feels will bring peace, yet actually obfuscating their ability to be present to and with the world around them and the free awareness and peace that is their own true nature. Yet, when we inquire into this idea of "mind" we see it is inherently empty -- and that we are talking about something that is unreal as if it is real.

In that light, I've noticed that to look for the mind to let go can often be an exercise that reinforces that which we are trying to change. What is it that would need something to let go or change, to contract against what is, but the very same mechanism and tension of the mind itself. I find that rather than try to stop mind, which perpetuates and reinforces this mechanism (with the mechanism itself), rest in the awareness or the space that the mind and its thoughts arise within. When you are no longer identified with and through "mind." when you can see your thoughts and beliefs for what they are (and not reality), there is no need to divide against them and mind. Thoughts can flow through and your own true nature can breathe its divine creative intelligence, undivided, and unobstructed.

Lisa Haisha: Is Your Humor Hurting People?

Lisa Haisha: Is Your Humor Hurting People?

There's someone in every family and group of friends who always has a joke ready for any situation. Being able to see the funny moments in any situation can be a great quality, but sometimes the laughter is really meant to cover deep negative emotions. When that happens, the "Clown" is at work.

The "Clown" is one of the eight "Impostors" I've identified that hijack people's behaviors. Because I live in Hollywood and work as a life coach to celebrities, I've seen more than my share of "Clown Impostors." I've even laughed with them! But I've also helped them work through the humor so they could get to their real, hidden issues. Underneath a veneer of cheer and light-heartedness, the "Clown" fears deep connections and craves attention.

The "Clown" in Action

Here's what a typical "Clown Impostor" looks like:

  • Often, the "Clown Impostor" stems from someone who didn't feel seen or heard as a child.
  • The "Clown" will try to make light of things to get attention.
  • "Clowns" are often scared of disappointment, avoid deep intimacy, and crave approval.
  • Because of their light-hearted approach to life, they usually don't give proper maturity to discussions that demand maturity.
  • Their primary focus is being liked rather than being real.

For the "Clown," humor is the perfect defense mechanism. It's a means of coping, usually due to a traumatic or difficult childhood. Therefore, the "Clown" often acts out by resorting to sarcasm in moments of personal duress and insecurity. This "Impostor" ends up keeping everyone at arm's length, eschewing any possible bonds that could help.

It's not uncommon to hear of a comedian's difficult childhood. Much has been written about comedians like George Lopez, Robin Williams, and Jim Carrey, who use humor as a way to deal with hurtful or lonely childhoods. It seems that the more they poke fun of themselves, the more others laugh, which makes the "Clown" feel accepted on some level. But no matter how much success or acceptance the "Clown" ultimately achieves, it usually fails to help the "Impostor" reconcile with its personal struggles and inner demons. When humor becomes the "Clown's" primary function and go-to reaction, thinly-veiled insecurity and pain manifest as sarcasm and further estranges the "Clown's" friends and family as they become unwitting targets of the "Impostor's" discontent.

The "Clown's" reliance on humor can quickly become natural, and become uncontrollable. Subsequently, situations that call for sensitivity and maturity will often feel out of a "Clown's" depth. Those who wish to depend on the "Clown" will find themselves avoiding the "Clown" when they encounter difficulty. This precludes the "Clown" from establishing lasting relationships, effectively relegating the "Impostor" into the category of the funny friend, or at its worst, the asshole friend.

How To Deal With Someone Else's "Clown Impostor"

Since funny people tend to attract attention and followers, chances are you interact with a few "Clown Impostors" on a regular basis. While they may be fun to hang with at first, it can quickly fade. When that happens, keep these suggestions in mind:

  • If someone with the "Clown Impostor" has made an inappropriate comment, don't react or validate them by giving them the attention they crave. Don't feign interest or comment at all on what they said.
  • Remember not to take it personally or allow their comments to offend you. Think of a stand-up comedian who pokes fun of someone in the audience -- that's who the Clown is trying to be, forgetting that poking fun of friends and acquaintances is very different. Don't argue back. They're only seeking attention.

Clear Away the Tears of a Clown

The longer the "Clown" reigns free, the harder it will be for you to come to terms with the problems you're facing. Of course, humor can also be used appropriately. But when humor is a quick-fix bandage for a deep wound, it only works for so long. Understanding the "Clown's" behavior is the best way to control this "Impostor" so it no longer controls you.

Get Serious - Go On a Comedy Diet!

One popular exercise that I use with my clients with the "Clown" Impostor is a "Comedy Diet." For 10 days, refrain from telling any jokes. Even in the most tempting situations, where you know the perfect punch line, don't allow yourself to crack! Allow yourself to stick with serious conversations, even if they make you uncomfortable. By stepping back, you'll also allow others to share in the limelight and share their own unique talents and sense of humor.

About the "Impostors": The "Impostors" are the cast of characters that star in Lisa Haisha's Soul Blazing method. They could be a metaphor for the "masks" that you wear, especially when confronted with something that you fear. Sometimes they're the voice in your head telling you that you're not good enough, or re-iterating negative conversations or experiences from your past that keep you stuck, like quicksand that keeps you from picking yourself up. These pesky devils are the saboteurs and squatters that live in the temple of your Authentic Soul, and keep you from shining bright!

There are eight Impostors in this cast, and they are:

  • The Wounded Inner Child

  • The Over Thinker

  • The Counselor

  • The Sex God(dess)

  • The Narcissist

  • The Philosopher

  • The Clown

  • The Fixer

4 Sneaky Health-Food Ingredients to Watch Out For

4 Sneaky Health-Food Ingredients to Watch Out For
A new study, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, looked at how much consumers actually pay attention to Nutrition Facts labels on food products.
When the study participants were asked about their label-reading habits, many said they read the nutrition facts: for example, 33 percent reported “almost always” reading the calorie content. (The number of people who reported reading other components of the label, such as fat and sugar content, was lower.) But when the researchers put the study participants to the test with an eye-tracking device, those who truly read the Nutrition Facts label was much lower (only 9% looked at calorie counts, for example)—and even when consumers did examine the nutrition information, very few assessed every component of the label.
As a dietitian and nutrition editor of EatingWell Magazine, I’m not terribly surprised by these findings. Nutrition Facts panels can be tedious to read—and, frankly, they aren’t nearly as visually appealing as the rest of the food package and the claims on it. Which is why, unless you’re a dedicated, detailed label-reader, you might be surprised to learn that sometimes there are not-so-healthy ingredients hiding in food you’d otherwise think is healthy.
Here are four food categories that, surprisingly, contain not-so-healthy ingredients that you should watch out for:

Lisa Firestone: What's Behind Emotional Overeating?

Lisa Firestone: What's Behind Emotional Overeating?

Last month, Michelle Obama made a special guest appearance on the long-running hit TV show The Biggest Loser. I'd heard about the show's premise: Contestants who struggle with obesity and often face serious health risks relocate to a fitness ranch, where together they learn about nutrition, diet, and exercise, while competing to lose weight. But I had never watched it until I saw the episode featuring the first lady. The contestants were invited to the White House where Mrs. Obama, in her typically down-to-earth and enthusiastic manner, joined in on the show's intense workout in an effort to spotlight the importance of diet and exercise. While the issue of obesity and poor nutrition are of tremendous significance, as our country struggles to get fit, we should also be shedding light on the emotional side of eating.

Whatever one may think of The Biggest Loser's "reality-TV editing" or competitive format, one thing I personally appreciate is that the show acknowledges that the factors contributing to obesity, food addiction, and weight gain go deeper than the surface. Contestants are encouraged to uncover and understand the psychological and emotional roots and implications of their struggle with their weight. When it comes to our relationship with food, there is much more going on than we would often assume. Like any addictive substance, food is often used to cover over or subdue emotional pain. It is used to numb us or soothe us, yet it is also used to torment us or cause us anxiety.

Struggles with eating and weight gain usually start early, when our relationship with food is first established. One contestant on The Biggest Loser described how the physical abuse he experienced throughout his childhood left him with a desire to somehow shield himself, both physically and emotionally. Growing up with a violent and erratic stepfather and a fearful mother who failed to protect him, he used food to "feel bigger," safer, and comforted. It's easy to see how such an extreme example of physical abuse could lead a child to start to use food as consolation and weight as armor. However, it is far more difficult to identify how more subtle forms of mistreatment, mis-attunement, and abuse can lead to issues with eating.

As children, we all experience varying degrees of emotional pain. The love, care, and nurturance we get from our caregivers lead us to form a positive sense of self and helps us to create our identity. Yet, no parent or person is perfect. Even the best parents are only attuned to their child's needs about 30 percent of the time. This means that, as children, each of us was inevitably left lacking certain things we needed. We may have felt rejected, isolated, unseen, or unheard. Conversely, we may have felt intruded on, overly controlled, or intimidated by our parents. All of these factors could have impacted our relationship with food. We literally and figuratively learned how to "feed" ourselves from how we were nurtured by our parents and influential caretakers.

Many of us eat for reasons other than to nourish our bodies or even to enjoy one of life's pleasures. To understand why we overeat, it's valuable to identify what the emotions are that lead us to mindlessly snack, overindulge, or binge. Are these feelings familiar? Do they bring up any memories or remind us of ways we felt in our past? Do our patterns of eating remind us of ways we saw our parents use food or other substances? Or conversely, might our actions seem like a reaction to ways we saw our parents use food or other substances?

A woman I know tells a story of her 30-year struggle with her weight. One of her earliest memories is of being barely over a year old and crying through the night for her bottle, while neither her mother nor her father woke to feed her. Night after night, hungry and alone, she would wait, but no one came. Finally, one morning when her mother brought her bottle, the child took the bottle and, even though she was starving, she refused it and threw it on the floor. She recalls that something shut down in her, and she never wanted food from her mother again. As she grew up, her relationship with food was further complicated by her mother's own struggle with weight and consistent focus on her young daughter's figure. As a result, the woman grew up suffering from binge eating, over-feeding herself with a desperation that indicated a disconnectedness from her body. She had trouble distinguishing her real feelings of hunger from a desire to fill herself up.

People with eating disorders, both overeaters and anorexics, disregard their own values and personal goals in relation to their health, looks, and lifestyle. They use food to feel bad about themselves, to punish themselves, or to gain a sense of control. Instead of using it to fuel their bodies, they use food to fuel a cycle of self-hatred and self-protection. All of us have an inner coach, or "critical inner voice," that lures us into destructive behavior then pounces on us the minute we mess up. The critical inner voice is a driving force behind an eating disorder, and to challenge an unhealthy relationship with food, a person must deal with this internal enemy.

We live in a society that supports being slim, sometimes to the extreme. This unrealistic ideal can be used in the service of our inner critic to put ourselves down, to feel inadequate , or to isolate us from the world around us. Failing to identify our critical voices as they come up, leaves us more at risk for falling off the wagon. However, we can challenge our voices by not engaging in the behaviors they are supporting. And even though they may initially become louder, enticing us and telling us we will fail, the more we ignore them, the more they lose their hold on us, and the stronger we become.

To have a healthy body, it is necessary for us to take action on a physical level with diet and exercise; but to have a healthy relationship with food, it is necessary for us to understand ourselves on a deeper emotional level, or to uncover why we eat the way we eat. If we challenge the behaviors alone through diet and exercise, the emotions we were using eating to cover up won't just go away. Once we identify the feelings and inner voices that perpetuate the cycle of self-hatred and the insensitivity to our body, we can gain control of self-destructive eating habits and not react adversely to pressure and triggers that lead us to abuse food. By taking action on a physical level and taking interest on an emotional level, we can re-establish our relationship with food, with our bodies, with our past, and with ourselves as a whole. We can uncover who we really are, our real wants, desires, and goals, and we can stop engaging in the patterns that get in our way.

Nancy Deville: The ‘Make It Or Break It’ Age For Your Health (And 8 Ways To Revamp Your Routine)

Nancy Deville: The ‘Make It Or Break It’ Age For Your Health (And 8 Ways To Revamp Your Routine)

The early 40s are the years to make significant changes to head off accelerated aging. It's a "make or break it" time of life. You can tailspin into aging, or you can revamp and renew yourself.

Week One
Love yourself. Every morning tell yourself how great you are. Really lay it on thick. Say, "I love you," out loud in the mirror while smiling.

Week Two
Switch to eating only real food. Yes, factory food is everywhere, but I have been in the most horribly toxic food environments and have managed to find something real, or close to it. Many diet books such as mine, Weight Loss Made Easy, have several weeks of breakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes. Cook a bunch of things at once. Pick the recipes you like and can whip together.

Week Three
Start exercising. All you have to do is break a sweat every day. You can exercise for 10 minutes before you take a shower. If you can do more, great, but if that's all you can do then be consistent. You can jump rope, do sit-ups, get some free weights and learn how to use them. Do a little yoga.

Week Four
Commit to getting enough sleep. Don't stay up till all hours. Your body needs repair time.

Week Five
Be mindful. If you can't formally meditate, then tie a red string around your wrist. Every time you notice it, remind yourself to be in the present moment.

Week Six
Find and an enlightened hormone doctor and make an appointment to see where you are hormonally. I believe bioidentical hormones have saved me. I have been on them for 16 years and would never, ever give them up.

Week Seven
Now it's time to start weeding toxins out of your life. Get rid of all chemical self and home care products. Buy chemical-free cosmetics. Toss out weirdly coated pots and pans (you can buy affordably-priced stainless steel at TJ Maxx), get rid of your microwave, have a water purification system put in (reverse osmosis, not the cheapie counter ones -- they don't filter much). Be mindful of the toxins you expose yourself too. Toxins age you!

Week Eight
Face off with your addictions: smoking and caffeine (sodas, coffee, tea, energy drinks) are two biggies.

Throughout your transformation, express gratitude. Research has demonstrated that gratitude is a powerful force that can radically alter your life in a good way. Be sure to direct some of that gratitude to your physical self for all of your efforts. You deserve it!

Low Back Pain and Sciatica Killing You? Chiropractic, Medical, and Surgical Options For Treatment.

Low Back Pain and Sciatica Killing You? Chiropractic, Medical, and Surgical Options For Treatment.
The pain in your low back drops you to your knees again. All you did was bend over to pick up the pen you dropped on the floor. This time is different, though. It's worse than it's been in the past. This time you feel pain shoot down the back of your leg. A white-hot dagger is stabbing you in the rear end and you feel numbness and tingling in your leg, perhaps all the way down to your foot. You can't straighten up to walk and you are limping along like you've been shot. You remain still and pray the pain goes away...but it doesn't go away. In fact, it's getting worse. Your thoughts come in rapid-fire succession, "what is happening to me, what should I do, who do I call, should I go to the emergency room, will I need surgery?" Good questions.

The pain in your low back drops you to your knees again. All you did was bend over to pick up the pen you dropped on the floor. This time is different, though. It’s worse than it’s been in the past. This time you feel pain shoot down the back of your leg. A white-hot dagger is stabbing you in the rear end and you feel numbness and tingling in your leg, perhaps all the way down to your foot. You can’t straighten up to walk and you are limping along like you’ve been shot. You remain still and pray the pain goes away…but it doesn’t go away. In fact, it’s getting worse. Your thoughts come in rapid-fire succession, “what is happening to me, what should I do, who do I call, should I go to the emergency room, will I need surgery?” Good questions.

If you are experiencing any combination of these symptoms, chances are you have a herniated disc in your lower back, one of the causes of mechanical back pain. The swelling from inflammation or the disc itself can cause an impingement or “pinching” of the spinal nerve root. The lower lumbar nerve roots eventually form the sciatic nerve in your leg. Inflammation of this nerve is commonly known as sciatica. “Mechanical low back pain is one of the most common patient complaints expressed to emergency physicians in the United States accounting for more than 6 million cases annually. Approximately two-thirds of adults are affected by mechanical low back pain at some point in their lives, making it the second most common complaint in ambulatory medicine and the third most expensive disorder in terms of health care dollars spent, surpassed only by cancer and heart disease.” 1

Now, just because you have these symptoms, doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to rush to the surgeon. In fact, according to a landmark study published in the medical journal Spine, “an operation should not be performed if other treatment will give equivalent results within an acceptable period of time…the patient with low back pain and sciatica should not automatically be referred to the surgeon.” 2 If that’s the case, then what are some of your other options? If you are like most people in a panic, the first place you will think to visit will be the emergency room. Otherwise, the most likely call you will make will be to your primary care physician. Traditionally, medical doctors will prescribe medications, such as anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, pain killers, or any combination of these. There are three problems with taking medication, if this is all that is done.

1. Medication only treats the symptoms.

2. Medication only provides temporary relief.

3. Medication has many unhealthy side-effects. Take the time to read the warning insert with any of these medications and you will know what I’m talking about.

By contrast, chiropractic care has been shown to be more effective in treating chronic low back pain than traditional medical care. In one study published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), it concluded that “…the improvement for chiropractic patients was 5 times greater [than for medical patients]. Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors show greater improvement and satisfaction at 1 month than patients treated by family physicians.” 3

So is surgery ever really necessary? The answer is, most definitely, yes. There are three absolute signs for surgical intervention: 1) those patients with cauda equina syndrome (which is rare), 2) those patients who display severe motor deficits resulting from a large extruded or migrated disc fragment, and 3) in patients with intractable pain. Unless at least one of these conditions is present, chiropractic care for the treatment of discogenic or mild to moderate sciatic pain from intervertebral disc herniation has been proven to be safe and effective. One study shows that chiropractic treatment (in this case in the cervical spine) is 100 times safer than using Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) like asprin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. 4 Another study shows patients had an 86% improvement in chronic low back pain after a course of chiropractic care. 5

Ultimately, in my opinion, medical care and chiropractic care are not mutually exclusive ways to treat mechanical low back pain and sciatica. I have seen great results with the most severe cases when managing them cooperatively with a patient’s primary care doctor or pain management specialist. In these cases, medication is useful or even necessary for the patient to tolerate conservative care; for example, when it is extremely difficult for the patient to move or to be moved. The more the patient can relax, the better the results of conservative care.

Lastly, not every case of sciatica is caused by a herniated disc. A condition called piriformis syndrome can cause impingement of the sciatic nerve as it exits the pelvis. Basically, the piriformis muscle attaches at the sacrum, passes through the greater sciatic notch of the pelvis, and attaches to the top of the femur (the upper leg bone). Atheletes who participate in sports where they are sitting, such as rowing or cycling are particularly vulnerable to strains of the piriformis. Runners who overpronate are also susceptible to piriformis injury. When the muscle is injured, it causes swelling due to inflammation, which can then irritate or compress the sciatic nerve as it exits the pelvis. It is important to rule out spinal injury as the cause of sciatica, but the following video will demonstrate a

. If your symptoms resolve after performing the stretch for a week or two, then you probably had piriformis syndrome and should continue this stretch as part of your daily routine to help prevent future injury. However, if you are still experiencing the same symptoms or if they intensify, seek professional help as soon as possible.

Need A New Look? Try These Great Beauty Tips

Need A New Look? Try These Great Beauty Tips
Many people think beauty is important, since it can boost their self-esteem and help them feel more attractive. The more beautiful and confident you appear, the more positive a response you will elicit from others. This article will show you how to look good on both the outside and the inside.

Many people think beauty is important, since it can boost their self-esteem and help them feel more attractive. The more beautiful and confident you appear, the more positive a response you will elicit from others. This article will show you how to look good on both the outside and the inside.

Give your hair, and your blow dryer, a rest. When you are using a blow dryer combined with a straightening or curling iron, you are doing a lot of damage to your hair and scalp. If using a hair dryer is a must, then at least use the mildest setting possible. By doing this, your hair will remain soft and silky.

People who have experienced a series of bumps on the back of their arms understand what keratosis pilaris is. They show up more often during the cold season because the humidity is lower during those months. The best method to help your skin would be to exfoliate with a moisturizing body scrub and then apply lotion afterwards.

Make sure your eyeliner and lipliner pencils are kept sharp. This helps keep them clean for the next use, and makes them easier to apply. A good tip is to put them in your freezer for 10 minutes before sharpening.

If you notice that your nail polish is becoming thick in the bottle or sticky, just add some acetone, or nail polish remover, into the bottle. Add only a small amount before shaking thoroughly. By doing this, you can get a couple of more uses out of the bottle.

Curry leaves can fight off greying. It contains the nutrients for producing pigment that colors your hair. You only need one teaspoon.

Pimples can sometimes appear unexpectedly and catch you unprepared. If this has happened to you, a quick home remedy is to put a small blot of regular toothpaste on it. Allow the toothpaste to sit on your skin for about 10 minutes, then wash it off with warm water. Using this technique should reduce the size of the pimple drastically.

If you want to brighten up your skin during the winter, consider a moisturizer or bronzer with warmer undertones. Both pink or gold ones work well. Carefully apply the product with a sponge to the brow and cheeks to give the illusion of warm, glowing skin. Don’t overdo it though, because it’s easy to just make your face look shiny and oily.

When taking a bath or shower, don’t use hot water. In hot water, your pores will open and your skin’s natural oils can escape. You will then wash the oil away. Instead, use lukewarm water if you wish to have softer skin. Also, it will save you on your electricity bill.

Working on your mind is the first place to start when trying to change your physical appearance. The big difference in those who look good versus those who don’t is that they do not know how to properly take care of themselves. Once you know how to take care of yourself it becomes a little less challenging.

Try eating healthy for better skin, nails and hair! When they say beauty is found on the inside, it’s more than just a quote about personality. Always ensure the food choices you make are packed with the nutrients your body needs. Fill your meals with plenty of whole grains, iron, zinc and proteins for strong and healthy hair, skin and nails.

Beauty is a combination of things that make a person appealing. Maintaining proper skin care is one of the more important pieces of remaining beautiful. A good majority of the population tend to overlook their skin care and are then surprised when they look thirty years older. It is a huge component for men and women and should be taken care of daily.

Make sure that your skin is properly maintained and prepared before you apply any foundation. Toning and moisturizing will make the foundation look natural and make it stay on longer. If you use the correct base, mineral makeup lasts longer. Liquid foundation, on the other hand, is easier to apply. A good base makeup helps any foundation to look and work better, while protecting and nourishing your skin.

Invest the necessary time to comprehend what is available in the marketplace to enhance your inner and outer beauty, which can shine today and for many tomorrows. The more you learn, the more effective and efficient you can make your own beauty procedures. This article gives you a few tips to start on the right path. Using this advice is a great start.
