Crohns disease is an inflammatory process in the digestive tract that can cause obstruction in the small or large intestines, ulcers or fistulas. About 95,000 people are diagnosed with Crohns in the U.K. and 2 million in North America.

At this time there is no conclusive evidence of the cause of Crohns and no known cure. There are some scientists who believe that it is an auto-immune response and others believe its a response to low stomach acid. Interestingly complications outside the intestines can occur such as inflammation in the eye and arthritis.

Patients will also experience remissions when they are symptom free and then other times when they experience relapses and symptoms flare. There are triggers to the flares that can be specific to each individual. Its important to understand and find your triggers so that you can avoid them.

Many people turn to natural remedies for Crohns disease so that they can avoid medications or if they cant afford the medications. Using natural remedies for Crohns disease also allows the body to heal itself more naturally which may decrease the number of relapses that you experience.

Diet is a critical factor to natural treatment. Many people find relief from Crohns disease when they avoid wheat, yeast and milk. Studies found that people who had a balance of Omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish like salmon and trout or Flaxseed oil) and Omega-6 fatty acids such as corn or sesame seed oil were at less risk for developing Crohns and had a better chance of achieving remission as well.

Hemp oil is the most balanced oil containing Omega 3, 6, and 9. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has positive effects on the inflammatory process when taken each day, starting with one teaspoon and gradually increasing to a tablespoon.

Another problem with Crohns disease is the overgrowth of candida. This is a fungal overgrowth that can be caused by killing off the good bacteria in the gut using antibiotics and steroids. Candida is normally a harmless yeast in our bowel but when our immune systems are compromised it can cause overgrowth leading to distribution in the blood. This creates poor energy levels.

Two natural remedies for Crohns disease and the overgrowth of Candida are Zell Oxygen and Wormwood, both of which you can get at the health food store.

Other natural remedies for Crohns disease includes the use of a natural whole food diet that is high in fiber when you are in remission and a low fat, low residue diet when you have relapsed (having symptoms). Giving your body the nutrients it needs to heal itself is important to help heal the intestines from the inflammatory response. The Crohns disease doesnt disappear but when the intestines have less inflammatory response they are able to absorb nutrients better, have a low risk of obstruction, ulcers and fistulas and dont cause the person pain, cramping and diarrhea. All very good reasons to continue to follow a well-balanced and nutritious diet.

People who suffer from Crohns disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases should avoid milk, caffeine, high fat and highly processed foods. These foods also cause problems for the intestinal inflammatory response.

GMO Gene Splicing Lunacy: Cabbage Mixed with Scorpion Poison Coming Soon

Would you consider scorpion venom ‘safe’? The next ‘safe’ GMO food for you to consume is a genetically altered cabbage that has been gene spliced with scorpion venom because it is more ‘resistant’ to Roundup ready chemicals, and of course they are telling us it is safe.

dnaorangestrand 263x164 GMO Gene Splicing Lunacy: Cabbage Mixed with Scorpion Poison Coming SoonWould you consider scorpion venom ‘safe’? The next ‘safe’ GMO food for you to consume is a genetically altered cabbage that has been gene spliced with scorpion venom because it is more ‘resistant’ to Roundup ready chemicals, and of course they are telling us it is safe.

As the GMO frankenfood business continues, the brain-children of the likes of Monsanto and Dow get progressively ludicrous. I beg a rap artist to talk about scorpion-poison genes interlaced with cabbage, just to exacerbate the inane to the masses of people who still believe these companies are out for your best interests, and really care about your health. Maybe a little ditty about the curling tail and venom of a vegetable might wake up the people who still believe GMO is good for you. It’s as if the hubris of Big Agriculture and Big Pharma companies is so enormous, that they have caricatured their own evil faces into their latest invention.

In 1994, a scorpion-poison-pesticide was made and ‘tested’ by spraying it in a field with scientists who wore full hazmat suits to protect themselves from it. Even the lead scientist in charge of running the trial was absent from the spraying altogether – perhaps David Bishop was just as worried as we are about scorpion cabbages.

Now, in 2013, the same genetic engineering is utilizing genes from the scorpion, Androctonus australis hector as a cross-breed with cabbages, of course with the goal of creating plenty of food for a growing population, and to feed us all. The FDA hasn’t done any research on this new crop, and it is probable that this newest freak-show of ‘food’ will turn out on our grocery store shelves before we can say, “WHAT?!”

Monsanto-backed science says that this tortuous invention is necessary because increasingly potent pesticides are necessary to grow crops. Our plants must be genetically altered to resist the pesticides that they make so that they can grow. If this isn’t already circular reasoning, its been proven that additional pesticides are causing bee population demise, and serious environmental impact, such as soil devaluation and super bug creation.

We are told time and time again that it is completely safe, but where are the unbiased reports stating this is so? And why should we believe them when they have clearly lied about other crops being ‘safe’ thus far. Everything from rice, to soy, to the rouge wheat that was found in Oregon are not safe. There are mounds of evidence by scientists not in Monsanto’s back pocket, who report as such.

Just one little white lie is that scorpion-poison made into pesticide is anything but safe. The ‘testing’ that they did was not done on live, healthy human cells, but MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Yes, let’s test cancer-causing agents on cancer, then use that ‘science’ to tell the public there is no harm in this genetic monster. We should have the makers of these monstrosities sit down to a Thanksgiving dinner of GMO scorpion-cabbage, corn, soy, salmon, etc. and eat until they can’t any longer and see just how ‘safe’ they are after consuming their own poison.

When friends do not understand <a target=weight loss" src="http://blog.fittothefinish.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/mean-cat.jpg" width="575" height="450" />

I had a person ask me what to do about the fact that her friends just did not seem to understand her weight loss efforts. She said that they told her things like, “Just live a little,” or “One good meal won’t hurt,” or “You are no fun anymore.”

That hurts. That’s frustrating. That’s annoying.

I had friends react in a variety of ways to my successful weight loss. (Remember that most of my friends at the time had seen me attempt to lose weight a bunch of times already.) While I did not share my weight loss plans with many people at first, once the weight loss became obvious, I got a lot of grief.

Some friends secretly told John that I wasn’t eating enough and that he should do something about it. Other friends tried to get me to taste their culinary creation because I was becoming a boring guest. Still others deliberately sabotaged me by dropping off cookies or a big piece of cake at the house “for a treat.”

At first I got really annoyed with all of them but tried not to show it. I’d tell them no in the very polite “southern” way that we use around here. That sounded something like this: “Thank you soooo much, but I really don’t want any right now. I appreciate you thinking of me though.” (Read that with a slight southern accent and you’ve got the idea.)

As time went on, I gave up on the southern niceties and just told them a curt, “No thanks.” I did not tell them to “Back Off” but that was the implication and they got the message. That stopped a lot of the sabotage and little comments pretty quickly. It also helped me weed out true friends from the not so true ones.

Only you can decide how to handle friends who do not “get” your desire to lose weight and eat a healthy diet. For me, continually saying no eventually sent a clear message to my friends that I was in this for the long haul, that I was finally serious about losing weight, and that no amount of chocolate cake could dissuade me from my diet plan.

I have known people who felt that the best way to handle friends who do not understand is to take each friend aside and give them the “back off” talk. I never felt comfortable doing that, although it would probably have sent the message more quickly than my attempting to be nice.

The bottom line for me was that it was my body, my decisions on what to eat or not eat, and my life. Some friends got it and we stayed friends and some really never understood. I’m sure there were some underlying issues with jealousy or judgment there, but that’s a topic for another post.

What’s your advice for dealing with friends who do not understand? Have you ever seen friends move away from you because of your food choices? Diane

It’s time for tips! You’re excited about it, right?

If you’re gonna be greedy, you may as well do it right. Don’t leave home without these golden nuggets of greedy truth I’m about to lay on ya…

Greedy Tip #1: Request that your 30-ounce slab of deep fried antelope sirloin be cooked well done. The longer the meat is heated, the more calories burn out of it.

Greedy Tip #2: Order a diet water with low fat carbonated bubbles. It’ll offset the calories in the leftover scraps you eat from off your dinner companions’ plates. (or am I the only one that does this???)

Greedy Tip #3: Don’t eat the free bread they bring to the table. Instead, stick it in your purse and save to make ham hock sammiches the next day. Once bread is safely tucked away, ask your server for a refill.

Greedy Tip #4: Are you walking funny from all the squats you did yesterday? Blame it on a slip & fall in the restaurant bathroom. The manager will scurry to appease you with discount coupons for future visits.

Greedy Tip #5: Consume approximately 98% of your antelope sirloin, then send it back to the kitchen because “it’s not cooked right”. The kitchen will bring you out a whole new slab of charred antelope meats at no extra charge. Free food is fun.

Top 10 Weight Loss Tips For Moms - Tip 5 Lower Your Stress to Cut Gut Fat

Top 10 Weight Loss Tips For Moms - Tip 5 Lower Your Stress to Cut Gut Fat
Cortisol is a stress hormone. We have cortisol in our bodies to help us cope with stress. For our ancestors, cortisol would set in when they felt an immediate threat or danger, like an animal chasing them, or if their lives were in immediate danger, this is also sometimes referred to as "fight or flight". When this happens cortisol is released, which speeds our heart rate, slows our digestion and gives our bodies the burst of energy and strength it needs to survive. But this is only supposed to happen when we are under serious threat or danger. But now cortisol is released when we are in traffic, or during a stressful day at work. For so many of us we are in a constant state of fight or flight, but it isn't supposed to be like this! And this is causing damage to our bodies, and keeping unhealthy weight around your belly.

Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses Benefits: A Mostly Ignored Inexpensive Superfood

Superfoods are considered super because they are more nutrient dense than most other foods. One superfood, unsulphured blackstrap molasses, is among numerous superfoods receiving little recognition when it should be in everyone's home. Read on to learn about blackstrap molasses benefits and what this superfood actually is.

blackstrap molasses 263x164 Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses Benefits: A Mostly Ignored Inexpensive SuperfoodSuperfoods are considered super because they are more nutrient dense than most other foods. One superfood, unsulphured blackstrap molasses, is among numerous superfoods receiving little recognition when it should be in everyone’s home. Read on to learn about blackstrap molasses benefits and what this superfood actually is.

Ironically, molasses is the byproduct or “waste” from processing sugar cane into unhealthful table sugar. Refined table sugar creates blood sugar and insulin instability while providing no nutrients. It actually robs nutrients, especially minerals, out of the body if consumed enough.

Once sugar canes are harvested, machines are used to press the juice out of the cane. Sugar cane roots go very deeply into the soil, often 15 feet down or more. That’s enough to bypass nutritionally depleted topsoil, which has become the norm with monoculture and chemically induced agriculture.

That juice is boiled then put through centrifugal machinery to extract the sugar crystals. Sun ripened sugar cane is processed without using sulphur, which is less than ideal for human consumption.

Read:  The Many Benefits of Coconut Oil

A third boiling necessary to extract table sugar from sugar cane produces a thick dark substance known as blackstrap molasses, which is the most nutrient dense of all.

Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses Health Benefits

It is well established that synthetically derived or composed mineral supplements are not as beneficial as nutritionally dense whole food sources. Enzymes and minerals are even more important than vitamins for our health.

Blackstrap molasses has a low glycemic index. This means the glucose and carbohydrates are metabolized slowly, demanding less insulin production and stabilizing blood sugar. This results in less lipids or fats being stored in the liver while reducing your diabetes 2 risk factor.

Because of its high iron content, many use blackstrap molasses to holistically overcome anemia. Iron is essential to creating red blood cells. In addition to iron, blackstrap molasses contains folate, a natural source for folic acid, along with some other B vitamins, which all combine to form the synergistic mix that promotes red blood cell production.

Then there is magnesium in abundance, along with calcium. Magnesium is important for balancing calcium for bone production and energy. It is necessary for the smooth function of our nervous system. The mineral is essential to over 300 metabolic processes and the synthesis of almost all the other minerals and vitamins. Yet several health practitioners have gone on record saying that most of the population is magnesium deficient. Might there be some health problems associated with that?

Magnesium is also helpful for maintaining heart health. Insufficient magnesium levels can result in muscle spasms, including the heart muscle, which of course relates to arrhythmia or even heart attacks.

Potassium is another mineral abundant in blackstrap molasses. A deficiency in potassium results in weak muscles and is considered a factor in causing arthritis. Potassium also helps maintain a calmly functioning nervous system and boosts heart health.

Manganese, a trace mineral, is very high in unsulphured blackstrap molasses. Manganese ions function with a number of enzymes, and are essential to combating unusual free radicals. Like magnesium, manganese also supports cellular absorption of nutrients, and is beneficial to the nervous system.

Other minerals that appear in abundance are copper and zinc. Zinc has been tagged as the male mineral because it helps support a healthy prostate. Working with zinc, copper helps eliminate oxidation damage.

All the minerals and nutrients of unsulphured blackstrap molasses are in their natural, balanced form to create a bio-accessible, nutritional synergy unavailable from supplements that are not food. Regardless of the amounts of nutrients listed in synthesized supplements, there is more bang for the buck with whole or super food sources.

A complete nutrient analysis is here.

Taste Concerns

Unsulphured blackstrap molasses can be incorporated with many food items as a sweetener despite its distinctive flavor. It works in teas or hot cereals, on pancakes and waffles or dessert items, or used as a glaze for cooking. Some people take right to it.

Others, especially those who have taste buds conditioned for years by sugar and artificial sweeteners, find it lacking as a sweetener.

Just like any transition from unhealthy processed “tasty” foods to healthier real foods, taste can be acquired even to a point of wondering why the junk food was consumed with so much relish in the first place!

What is more important: a long lasting healthier condition, or immediately satisfying cravings that lead to serious health problems?

Unsulphured blackstrap molasses is easily managed as a tonic. Mixing a tablespoon or two with a glass of warm water works well as a mineral tonic. Some have used this mix three times a day as a remedy for extremely poor health conditions.

Restoring or maintaining health through natural whole foods requires a sustained intake over time, but it’s still less expensive than medications or even synthetically derived supplements. And the results are real and permanent without side effects.

Marijuana Bill: Nevada to Soon Have Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Medical marijuana has been legal in Nevada for several years, but lawmakers in the state have finally passed SB374, which legalizes dispensaries and will soon give registered medical marijuana patients the ability to purchase their pot legally.

marijuana bud1 263x164 Marijuana Bill: Nevada to Soon Have Medical Marijuana DispensariesMedical marijuana has been legal in Nevada for several years—since voters passed the legislation in 2000. But until now, the only legal access patients had to their medicine was by growing it themselves. Finally, lawmakers in the state have passed SB374, which legalizes dispensaries and will soon give registered medical marijuana patients the ability to purchase their pot legally.

Republican Governor Brian Sandoval signed the bill last week which will impose fees and requirements, and set up the frame work for growers, dispensaries, and processors of medical marijuana in that state. Patients will be allowed to continue growing their own until 2016 under the new law.

Medical marijuana, which is legal in 19 states, offers a natural solution for numerous different diseases and pain conditions. But for 13 years, residents of Nevada had to wait for lawmakers to catch up. Even now, not all of them are convinced dispensaries are a smart way to go.

Some, for instance, are still making the tired argument that creating dispensaries will encourage rampant “drug use” and even crime. Apparently, these legislators fail to see that until now many of their patients were likely buying their pot on the black market.

“This new law will provide patients with the safe and reliable access to medical marijuana that they deserve,” said Karen O’Keefe, of the Marijuana Policy Project. “Regulating medical marijuana sales will also generate revenue and take a bite out of the state’s underground marijuana market.”

The marijuana will be taxed at all stages—from growing to processing, and selling—with the proceeds funding the dispensaries themselves. Any surplus will be sent into the education system. Of course we know some people will be getting rich off of this new profitable field.

Though legalizing dispensaries is still a far cry from all-out marijuana legalization that Washington and Colorado states implemented, it is a step in the right direction. As states continue to push back against the federal commitment to marijuana prohibition, we will hopefully get to a tipping point where the federal government realizes their resistance to the will of the people is futile.

Because the federal government maintains that marijuana is a dangerous, addictive Schedule I substance and has no medicinal value, states that pass medical marijuana or even recreational marijuana laws stand to face legal action from the feds. Though the feds have a legal ground to stand on, the states and people themselves support an end to prohibition now more than ever.
