Study Links Gum Disease with Erectile Dysfunction

Periodontal (gum) disease affects a multitude of people from all walks of life. And more and more we are learning that diseases of the gums can be traced to ill health in general. One study has shown that gum disease could even cause erectile dysfunction.
According to researchers, gum disease in rats was associated with impaired sexual function. And this isn’t the first study to find a link. Another found that men who struggle with erectile dysfunction are more likely to have gum disease than those who do not.
“Identifying and treating periodontitis in the patient presenting with or without [erectile dysfunction] may improve the patient’s sexual health,” said the researchers from China’s Luzhou Medical College.
But of course the research isn’t without some critics. “I don’t think your gums are related to your penis in any reasonable way,” said one of those critics, Dr. Andrew Kramer, erectile dysfunction expert with the University of Maryland Medical Center. But what these critics should realize is that everything in our bodies is interconnected in ways we don’t even know about yet. Even Eastern medicine recognizes a potential connection between a part of the body and the health of your liver, for example.
Dr. Kramer suggested that gum disease may be an indication of poor health overall, and that poor health overall could lead to erectile dysfunction, rather than drawing a direct line from gum health to sexual health. Specifically, periodontitis has been linked with an increased risk of heart disease and inflammation – two recognized contributors to ED.
Whether the link is direct or indirect, other studies have established similarly questionable links between gum disease and certain types of cancer.
So, what’s the solution? Being healthy and maintaining proper oral health, of course. A healthy body includes healthy gums and therefore good sexual health and a decreased risk of cancer. Start brushing and flossing your teeth regularly, and why not try oil pulling to boost oral health. Oil pulling has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine and involves swishing oil in your mouth to remove impurities and promote better oral health and health overall.
Sesame, sunflower, and coconut oil are all good options for oil pulling. The best results can be found when you do it daily, before brushing and on an empty stomach. Simply swish the oil in your mouth for 15 minutes before spitting out. Who knows, a healthy mouth could lead you to a healthy sex life!
Take care of your teeth, by all means, but also eat a healthful diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, and exercise regularly.

Green Tea Shown to Protect against Digestive Cancer
Green tea may offer the solution (or at least part of a solution) in the prevention of digestive cancers, according to another study out of China. Older women were analyzed for green tea consumption and cancer rates, and scientists found those who drank the tea on a regular basis were at a slightly lower risk for developing cancer of the colon, throat, and stomach.
The researchers followed nearly 70,000 Chinese women for a decade. Those who drank more than three cups of green tea daily were considered “regular” drinkers. And those women were at a reduced risk of digestive cancers—a 14 percent reduced risk.
Senior researcher Dr. Wei Zheng cautioned that the study doesn’t establish a “cause-and-effect” relationship. While the scientists did account for diet, exercise habits, and medical history, they say it’s impossible to account for everything.
Basically, it’s difficult to isolate the effects of a single food in any scientific trial. People eat other things, they may have different lifestyle habits, or they might be on prescription medications. They could get more sleep than other non-green-tea drinkers or simply take better care of themselves.
Still, this isn’t the first or the last study on the benefits of green tea.
There is a good chance that people who drink green tea take better care of themselves. So, while we cannot be certain their health is due to the green tea and not simply better care overall, we do know that green tea (whether directly or indirectly), can improve health.
Green tea contains EGCG, a powerful antioxidant believed to protect cells from damage by free-radicals or toxins. It’s believed this is what could hold the key to the cancer prevention properties of the age-old elixir.
It’s this EGCG that could also be responsible for stopping and even reversing cancer once it’s started. A study we reported on this past summer showed green tea extract was able to reduce enlarged and cancerous lymph nodes by more than 50%.
In addition, green tea is able to help with weight loss, protect skin from damage, and even prevent the flu. Adding green tea seems like a no-brainer. Just get a few cups a week to begin reaping the benefits.

Start Juicing for Complete Rejuvenation and Boosted Health
Ask any vegan or vegetarian - the more plants you eat, the healthier you are. And when we bring the activity of juicing into the mix, you will likely see an even greater boost in overall health and wellness. If you aren't juicing yet, then it's time to start right now.
Ask any vegan or vegetarian – the more plants you eat, the healthier you are. And when you bring the activity of juicing into the mix, you will see an even greater boost in overall health and wellness. If you aren’t juicing yet, then it’s time to start right now.
One great aspect of juicing is the ability to consume more than you normally would in an easy way. Let’s say you want some of the rich benefits of kale. You could serve some with your dinner tonight, getting about a half-cup of the greens, or you could add it to your blender and get far more without feeling full. In addition, you could add some carrots, cucumbers and parsley and all of the benefits they offer.
As a morning meal replacement or a snack mid-day, a smoothie or juice can help you get your body in top condition.
You have two options when deciding to juice: using a juicer or a blender. I personally prefer a blender, as the “juices” become more smoothie-esque. When you use a juicer, you are missing out on much of the fiber found in the whole vegetables. In a smoothie, you get it all. Some people don’t like chunks or the thicker texture of a veggie smoothie, while some people love it. The bottom line is that both juices and smoothies are excellent for you and either will work.
Next, deciding what will go inside. Some say it’s best to separate your vegetables from your fruit. But, particularly to those new to juicing, an all-green veggie juice can be a little hard to take. Fruit supplies a little bit of natural sugar to make the juice more palatable.
Read more about how beneficial juicing can be.
When juicing, it’s good to very often choose a leafy green vegetable; this should be the foundation of your juice or smoothie. I like kale but again, it’s a really dark veggie and some prefer something a little smoother. Spinach is a great option too. Then, add what you like. Cucumbers offer great detoxifying benefits and plenty of water with little taste—they are a common addition to vegetable juices. Celery is another frequent fave. Herbs like cilantro and parsley are great additions that provide a clean, crisp flavor.
Get creative and have fun. Keep it organic when possible and add water, coconut water, or almond milk rather than prepared juices for any necessary liquid. Once you start juicing, you’ll find some favorite combinations in a short time and be reaping the many health benefits for the rest of your life. Great choice!

Parasite Found in Kitty Litter may Cause Mental Illness
According to new research out of Sweden, a very common cat litter parasite, known as Toxoplasma gondii, may contribute to mental illness. Between 30-50% of the world population is infected with Toxoplasmosis, caused by exposure to the parasite in question.
Something very bad may be lurking in your kitty litter box. According to new research out of Sweden, a very common cat litter parasite, known as Toxoplasma gondii, may contribute to mental illness. Between 30-50% of the world population is infected with Toxoplasmosis, caused by exposure to the parasite in question. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 60 million people worldwide may be infected. Swedish experts estimate that 20% of their population has been infected.
Parasite Exposure
The most common point of contact between humans and this nasty parasite is in poorly cooked meat. The CDC reports that toxoplasmosis is the leading cause of death from foodborne illness. People can also become infected by touching cat feces when cleaning the litter.
Symptoms
If you have a strong immune system, it is unlikely that you will ever know that you have been exposed to the parasite. However, infection can cause mild like flu symptoms before heading into a symptomless dormant stage. The real concern is with people who have a stressed immune system or those that are pregnant. The parasite can enter the brain of fetuses and people whose bodies are too weak to put up a defense.
Risky Behavior and Toxoplasmosis
Although toxoplasmosis appears to go dormant in healthy subjects, researchers are now concerned that perhaps there is more going on behind this symptomless facade.
Some studies have found that people who have toxoplasmosis have a higher rate of depression, anxiety and schizophrenia. This information coupled with the fact that infected laboratory rats are not afraid of cats and may even be attracted to them. They become easy prey and scientists feel that this is how the parasite assures its survival. The cats consume the infected rats and more parasites turn up in their feces that will infect more rats.
Once the parasite is in the brain it appears to hijack the chemical messengers responsible for passing signals to different parts of the brain to secure their propagation. Isolated research done on infected cells indicates that the parasite causes immune cells to secrete a chemical messenger known as GABA. People with mental illnesses such as bipolar disease, anxiety, depression and schizophrenia all show disturbances with GABA systems.
Other research, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, came to similar conclusions as far as mental status being compromised. Looking at 45,000 women in Denmark, the researchers found that those infected with T. gondii were 1.5 times more likely to attempt suicide than those unaffected.
“The fact that a parasite can get into an organism, target its brain, stay there without killing the host and alter the circuitry of the brain— we’ve seen this in insects and fungi, but it’s the first time we’ve seen it in a mammalian host,” said Stanford University’s Patrick House.
Although humans have lived with parasites since the beginning of time, these studies warrant further investigation into the role of this parasite and potential mental illnesses in our society.
Tip: Always wash your hands after changing the kitty litter, stay clear of littler if you are pregnant, and cook all your meat well.

Researchers Link Secondhand Smoke with Increased Dementia Risk
A joint international study between researchers in the UK, USA, and China suggests that second-hand smoke could increase the risk of severe dementia. Previous studies have found that environmental smoke can cause lung cancer and coronary heart disease in non smokers, however, this is the first study to show a strong link between passive smoke and syndromes of dementia and cognitive decline.
The study involved almost 6,000 people over age 60, all of which were interviewed by the researchers. It was found that 10% of them had severe dementia syndromes.
Types of Secondhand Smoke
There are two different types of secondhand – environmental and passive smoke. The first is known as sidestream smoke, which comes from the lit part of a pipe, cigar or cigarette. The second type, mainstream smoke is exhaled smoke. Sidestream smoke has the highest amount of cancer causing particles. While both types are bad, sidestream smoke has the highest amount of cancer causing particles that make their way into the body easily. According to the CDC, secondhand smoke contains over 7000 chemicals. Hundreds of these chemicals are toxic approximately 70 are carcinogenic. No wonder the harmful effects of smoking are so prevalent.
Tobacco Use in China
China ranks number one as the largest consumer of tobacco products in the world and has over 350 million smokers. Officials in China have actively pursued, since 2006, the implementation of no smoking laws in public places such as schools, hospitals, public transportation and other public places. However, there are still a number of places where implementation has not taken place. Over 50% of people are exposed to passive smoke daily in China where the highest numbers of dementia sufferers in the world can be found. With their aging population, it is believed that dementia will continue to put tremendous pressures on families and society in general.
Smoke-Free Laws
According to the World Health Organization, over 80 percent of the people who smoke live in areas where tobacco-related health problems including death is the highest. A mere 11 percent of the world’s population are protected by laws that regulate secondhand smoke.
Whether or not you believe in smoking laws, it’s important to recognize how smoking affects yourself, children, and society as a whole.

Home Remedies for Ringworm – 6 Natural Ringworm Treatments
While ringworm treatments most often consist of creams and ointments found at your local pharmacy, there are indeed a number of natural home remedies for ringworm which people have been utilizing for countless years.

Image from webmd.com.
Ringworm, also known as tinea, is a health issue characterized by a red, itchy, unattractive ring that appears on the body. The issue is actually a contagious fungal infection (has nothing to do with worms) that can appear on the body, feet, groin, scalp, nails, or even beard. While ringworm treatments most often consist of creams and ointments found at your local pharmacy, there are indeed a number of natural home remedies for ringworm which people have been utilizing for countless years.
Some Home Remedies for Ringworm
- Apple Cider Vinegar – Adding on the the truly countless apple cider vinegar cures, this magical substance can also be used to treat ringworm. Simply apply ACV to the ringworm throughout the day, and ingest the liquid throughout the day in water (this will boost overall health and help to rid your body of the ringworm). Some people have also found combining ACV with 99.9% DMSO to be an effective solution. Try a 1:1 radio, such as a teaspoon of each.
- Garlic – Garlic is an amazingly beneficial, antifungal food that has been used for countless health ailments, including ringworm. Simply peel a clove, cut the garlic into thin slices, apply it to the ringworm, and cover the area with a band-aid overnight. You could also try crushing it then applying, or simply rub the slices over the area. Further, you can apply the garlic throughout the day. (Be sure to check out other garlic benefits).
- A Natural Product to Remove Fungal Organisms – In addition to the solutions that can be found within your local grocery store, there are also some natural (and less often organic) products out there. Two products worth considering are Mycozil™, and Paratrex™ – both of which are developed by Dr. Edward Group. These products are designed to rid your body of yeast and fungal organisms, as well as parasites. Both are viable natural options before turning to pharmaceutical medications.
- Black Walnuts – A home remedy passed down from long ago, cutting open and rubbing juice from the green skin of black walnuts may be an effective ringworm treatment. Simply peel green outer hull off and rub the ringworm with the inside of the hull; within a few days, the problem should begin to disappear.
- Colloidal Silver – A natural antibiotic that destroys hundreds of harmful microorganisms, colloidal silver can be used topically to get rid of ringworm. Simply spray, or tab colloidal silver on the ringworm using a sterile pad.
- Lavender Oil- Adding on to the home remedies for ringworm, lavender oil is another substance with potent anti-fungal effects. Research even shows how the oil not only stops the growth of fungi, but kills fungal infections such as ringworm, Athlete’s foot, and candida albicans.
In the end, you may turn to an anti-fungal cream or ointment to treat your ringworm problem, but before you do, why not give some of these natural ringworm treatments a try.
Other Ringworm Treatments
- Organic extra virgin coconut oil
- Ozonated olive oil paste
- Oregano oil
- Daily probiotics (to be taken along with whichever treatment you pursue)
- Fig leaves – Cut open a leaf and rub the milk or sap on the ringworm.
- Neem oil - Used in Ayurvedic medicine, neem is effective against fungal conditions
- Turmeric – Apply juice of raw turmeric to the ringworm throughout the day. Further, ingest a teaspoon of turmeric juice and honey mixed together daily.
Although there may be other home remedies for ringworm, the above solutions are among the most popular. Don’t forget to share your experiences and what works or doesn’t work for you.

4 Herbs for Sciatica Pain Treatment
Generally, those who suffer from sciatica can find some measure of relief in stretching, frequently changing positions, and exercise. Many, however, turn to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) that come with numerous consequences. Instead, here are 4 herbal choices which have proven effective again and again in the treatment of sciatica pain.

Generally, those who suffer from sciatica can find some measure of relief in stretching, frequently changing positions, and exercise. Many, however, turn to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) for sciatica pain treatment. Unfortunately, when they opt for these pills, they are assuming numerous risks in an an effort to rid themselves of their sciatica.
Fortunately, there are alternatives. They aren’t as widely known as the big-name over-the-counter drugs because their makers don’t have the same marketing budget and they aren’t given the same amount of attention from the medical field. Still, many of these herbal choices have proven effective again and again in the treatment of sciatica pain.
1. Turmeric for Sciatica Pain Treatment
Turmeric has received a lot of play lately for its anti-inflammatory benefits. But its record in natural health is long -standing. Thanks to harnessing anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can help relieve sciatica pain and swelling by lowering levels of certain inflammation-fueling enzymes. Ingest it as a tea, use it in your cooking, or even apply it topically in a paste for the best benefits.
This is just one of many health benefits of turmeric.
2. Jamaican dogwood
Derived from bark of the dogwood tree, Jamaican dogweed is a powerful substance used to relieve nerve pain. It can be taken as a supplement in capsule form or applied as a tincture. Jamaican dogwood should not be used by pregnant or lactating women, however.
3. Arnica
Arnica is a time-tested homeopathic remedy for all sorts of aches and injuries. It can be found online through several homeopathic vendors and is offered both in the traditional homeopathic oral solution or in creams and rubs.
4. Garlic
Like turmeric, garlic also has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, making it a great sciatica pain treatment. Increase your use garlic in all your dishes, but also consider taking the cloves directly as a supplement. Four raw cloves each morning can go a long way to fight pain (and also to boost your immune system). The benefits of garlic truly are amazing.
Sciatica pain can be effectively managed naturally. By combining herbal remedies with regular physical activity and stretching, you can potentially relieve much of your pain and discomfort. Yoga, swimming, and even walking are some additional sciatica pain treatment tips.
A Little About Sciaitica
The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down through each leg. Sciatica is the term used to describe pain originating in this nerve, either due to compression, inflammation, or general irritation. For many people, sciatica pain is unbearable. It can also include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected leg(s).

The Numbers on Plastic Bottles: What do Plastic Recycling Symbols Mean?
Have you ever wondered what the numbers, or recycling symbols mean at the bottom of plastic bottles and containers? Did you know that, while the use of all plastics should be limited if at all possible, some are safer than others? It's time to learn a little bit about the various plastics you use and drink/eat from every single day, and what impact they have not only on you, but also the environment.
Have you ever wondered what the numbers, or recycling symbols mean at the bottom of plastic bottles and containers? Did you know that, while the use of all plastics should be limited if at all possible, some are safer than others? It’s time to learn a little bit about the various plastics you use and drink/eat from every single day, and what impact they have not only on you, but also the environment.
Every plastic container or bottle has a recycling symbol. The symbol is a number, ranging from 1 to 7, within a triangle. While you may think nothing of these symbols, they can actually offer a great deal of information regarding the toxic chemicals used in the plastic, how likely the plastic is to leach, how un-bio-degradable the plastic is, and ultimately the safety of the plastic.
Here is some information on the various recycling symbols and numbers:
The Recycling Symbols
Plastic #1 – PETE or PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
- Picked up by most curbside recycling programs, plastic #1 is usually clear and used to make soda and water bottles. Some consider it safe, but this plastic is known to allow bacteria and flavor to accumulate.
- It’s found mostly in soda bottles, water bottles, beer bottles, salad dressing containers, mouthwash bottles, and peanut butter containers.
- Plastic #1 is recycled into tote bags, furniture, carpet, paneling, fiber, and polar fleece.
Plastic #2 – HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)
- Plastic #2 is typically opaque and picked up by most curbside recycling programs. This plastic is one of the 3 plastics considered to be safe, and has a lower risk of leaching.
- It’s found mostly in milk jugs, household cleaner containers, juice bottles, shampoo bottles, cereal box liners, detergent bottles, motor oil bottles, yogurt tubs, and butter tubs.ilk jugs, detergent bottles, juice bottles, butter tubs, and toiletries bottles are made of this. It is usually opaque. This plastic is considered safe and has low risk of leaching.
- Plastic #2 is recycled into pens, recycling containers, picnic tables, lumber, benches, fencing, and detergent bottles, to name a few.
Plastic #3 – V or PVC (Vinyl)
- Plastic #3 is used to make food wrap, plumbing pipes, and detergent bottles, and is seldom accepted by curbside recycling programs. These plastics used to, and still may, contain phthalates, which are linked to numerous health issues ranging from developmental problems to miscarriages. They also contain DEHA, which can be carcinogenic with long-term exposure. DEHA has also been linked to loss of bone mass and liver problems. Don’t cook with or burn this plastic.
- It’s found in shampoo bottles, clear food packaging, cooking oil bottles, medical equipment, piping, and windows.
- This plastic is recycled into paneling, flooring, speed bumps, decks, and roadway gutters.
Plastic #4 – LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene)
- Low density polyethylene is most found in squeezable bottles, shopping bags, clothing, carpet, frozen food, bread bags, and some food wraps. Curbside recycling programs haven’t been known to pick up this plastic, but more are starting to accept it. Plastic #4 rests among the recycling symbols considered to be safe.
- This plastic is recycled into compost bins, paneling, trash can liners and cans, floor tiles, and shipping envelopes.
Plastic #5 – PP (Polypropylene)
- Increasingly becoming accepted by curbside recycle programs, plastic #5 is also one of the safer plastics to look for.
- It is typically found in yogurt containers, ketchup bottles, syrup bottles, and medicine bottles.
- Polypropylene is recycled into brooms, auto battery cases, bins, pallets, signal lights, ice scrapers, and bycycle racks.
Plastic #6 – PS (Polystyrene)
- Polystyrene is Styrofoam, which is notorious for being difficult to recycle, and thus, bad for the environment. This kind of plastic also poses a health risk, leaching potentially toxic chemicals, especially when heated. Most recycling programs won’t accept it.
- Plastic #6 is found in compact disc cases, egg cartons, meat trays, and disposable plates and cups.
- It is recycled into egg cartons, vents, foam packing, and insulation.
Plastic #7 – Other, Miscellaneous
- All of the plastic resins that don’t fit into the other categories are placed in the number 7 category. It’s a mix bag of plastics that includes polycarbonate, which contains the toxic bisphenol-A (BPA). These plastics should be avoided due to possibly containing hormone disruptors like BPA, which has been linked to infertility, hyperactivity, reproductive problems, and other health issues.
- Plastic #7 is found in sunglasses, iPod cases, computer cases, nylon, 3- and 5-gallon water bottles, and bullet-proof materials.
- It is recycled into plastic lumber and other custom-made products.
The Bottom Line: Which Recycling Numbers to Avoid, Which are ‘Safest’
In the end, it’s really best to avoid using all plastics if you’re able. But at the very least:
- Avoid recycling symbols 3, 6, and 7. While Number 1 is considered safe, it is also best to avoid this plastic.
- Look for symbols 2, 4, and 5, as these plastics are considered to be safest. These are the plastics to look for in terms of human and animal consumption.
In the end, plastics will still be used, but you can certainly limit your use of the product. Instead of buying plastic water bottles or other plastic containers, choose glass or invest in a high quality water filtration system to obtain your water from. (This is best for your health anyway).

For Weight Loss, Is When You Eat as Important as What You Eat?

Do you follow the folk wisdom practice of eating like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch and a pauper for dinner? Or do you hoard your calories and eat like a pauper throughout the day and like a king at night? If you tell me what time of day you eat your main meal, I’ll tell you whether you’ll be successful in your weight-loss efforts.
This declaration is based on a large-scale study, reported in the January 2013 issue of the International Journal of Obesity, conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Tufts University in the United States and the University of Murcia in Spain.
Researchers followed 420 individuals who enrolled in a 20-week weight-loss program in Spain. The individuals were divided into two groups: early eaters and late eaters. Early eaters ate a Mediterranean-style lunch before 3 p.m., and late eaters ate their lunch after 3 p.m. During this meal, about 40 percent of the day’s calories were consumed.
The study revealed that late eaters lost “significantly less weight” than early eaters and lost weight at a slower rate. Late eaters also had lower insulin sensitivity, which is a risk factor for diabetes.
In reaching this conclusion, researchers took into account the total calories consumed, energy expenditure, amount of sleep and other variables. Since there were no significant differences between the early eaters and late eaters in these variables, the researchers concluded that the time of the meal was the determining factor for weight-loss success.
Frank Scheer, PhD, MSc, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, was the senior author of this study, and his conclusion suggests how we can apply this insight in our daily routines: “Our results indicate that late eaters displayed a slower weight-loss rate and lost significantly less weight than early eaters, suggesting that the timing of large meals could be an important factor in a weight loss program.”
Folk wisdom has a bad reputation for offering contrary advice. For example, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” contradicts “Out of sight, out of mind.” And “Opposites attract” disputes “Birds of a feather flock together.” But in this case, Grandma’s advice to eat a hearty breakfast, a solid lunch and a light supper is spot on. Researchers tell us that to improve our chances for successful weight loss, we need to eat our biggest meal midday rather than consume the traditional calorie-laden evening meal.

4 Fast Food Ingredients Way Worse than Horsemeat
Burger King recently admitted to using horsemeat in their burgers, but here are 4 known fast food ingredients that are way worse than horsemeat.
As you’re likely aware, Burger King UK recently admitted that its famous fast food symbol the Whopper (and its other burgers) were actually made using horsemeat. In an admission that came just hours after denying the presence of horsemeat in the burgers, the secret ingredient has been broadcast on media stations worldwide as a breaking news piece. But what about the ingredients we know exist in many fast food creations and are actually far more concerning?
The fact that Burger King products contain horsemeat and the company denied the link to consumers before being forced to admit it due to DNA evidence reveals a few different things. First of all, it sheds even more light on how fast food eaters truly have no idea what they’re eating — a revelation that will be further revealed by exposing the known chemicals in these products. Secondly, it shows that Burger King either:
- Possibility A: Genuinely does not care about consumers and has denied the existence of horsemeat in their products as to not incite profit loss and media turmoil.
- Possibility B: Burger King genuinely has no idea what its own products contain. Whether it be horsemeat or other ingredients, they are honestly clueless.
It is debatable which of these possible scenarios is worse, however they both are concerning. Especially when you know what Burger King is telling you about. And that leads to the third thing that the horsemeat revelation tells us: considering the highly toxic chemicals and other admitted ingredients inside fast food products, a lack of true ingredients listing may mean an even more disturbing list of additives. As for what we do know, however, here are 4 fast food ingredients that are way worse than horsemeat:
1. Electronic Cigarette Filler, Synthetic Laxative
You may have fond memories of enjoying a Wendy’s Frosty, but the lengthy and gut-wrenching list of chemicals that create what is labeled as a ‘milkshake’ contain more than one bad surprise. Wendy’s Frosty contains the typical ensemble of fast food components such as traditionally-GMO corn syrup, artificial flavorings, and a list of thickening agents. Of the 14 ingredients it takes to create the fast food top seller, one chemical stands out. Contained in the Coffee Toffee Twisted Frosty, a laxative chemical and electronic cigarette filler known as propylene glycol is among the 25 new ingredients that make up this special Frosty.
Peer-reviewed research available on PubMed reveals that propylene glycol has been associated with neurotoxic effects in children and a reduction in the permeability of the blood brain barrier. Propylene glycol is also used ”as the killing and preserving agent in pitfall traps, usually used to capture ground beetles.” It just so happens to even be illegal in cat food.
Wendy’s Toffee Twisted Frosty also contains mercury-filled high-fructose corn syrup.
2. Flour-Bleaching Agent Used in Yoga Mats, Foamed Plastics
If you were to use this yoga mat ingredient to produce food in another nation like Singapore, you would face fines up to $450,000 and 15 years in prison. In the United States, you can charge money and market the creation as the McRib. And that’s exactly what McDonald’s did. The McDonald’s McRib not only contains GMOs, deadly chemicals, and harmful fillers, but an ingredient known as azodicarbonamide. Banned in Australia, Europe, and Singapore, azodicarbonamide is used in the creation of foamed plastics like yoga mats.
The troubling chemical is one of the 70 ingredients that compromise the ‘pork’ in the McRib sandwich.
3. Silicone Breast Implant Filler
It really seems like McDonald’s is attempting to utilize a long list of banned ingredients in order to create its world famous fast food cancer bombs. McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets have a reputation as one of the worst food items on the planet for a reason. The so-called ‘meat’ of the nugget is actually made up of 7 different ingredients — not chicken. These include sodium phosphate, safflower oil, wheat starch, dextrose, and a particularly dangerous substance known as autolyzed yeast extract. While not the silicone breast implant chemical, but it is very similar in nature to MSG.
McDonald’s chicken McNuggets are full of surprises for sure, also containing dimethylpolysiloxane. This is the chemical that is used in silicone breast implants and silly putty, or at least will be for a short while longer. Dimethylpolysiloxane is actually being phased out as a breast plant filler due to safety concerns by the industry. It is still used by McDonald’s, however – at least in the US. McNuggets in Britain do not contain some of the dangerous chemicals that are so easily permitted in the US.
4. Chemical Salad
Is choosing the salad at a fast food establishment really the healthier choice? If you follow the marketing campaigns of these corporations, you may believe so. The sad truth, however, is that virtually every item sold in a fast food restaurant is tainted in some way with harsh chemicals and additives. Take McDonald’s ‘healthy’ salads, for example. Not only does the ‘cilantro lime glaze’ and the ‘orange glaze’ used on many of these salads contain propylene glycol (the chemical discussed in #1 as the laxative and electronic cigarette filler), but a medley of others on this list as well.
Two chemicals, however, stand out with the salad. Disodium inosinate, and disodium guanylate both divulge the presence of MSG within the ‘healthy’ salad.
It may seem like old news to some, but the reality is that even ‘healthy’ fast food items are filled with toxic ingredients. Remember, it’s not about the food itself (salad, for example), but what it contains. Until we realize that lettuce may contain more than the eye can perceive, such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, preservatives, flavor enhancers, sweeteners, and more, it will be impossible to establish what ‘health’ really means.

Have you heard of the mushroom being used to boost the immune system and fight cancer? While there are countless foods and compounds out there being researched for their cancer-fighting abilities, the turkey tail mushroom is one food that has gained some spotlight as of recent. Specifically, the mushroom has been shown to be highly effective at suppressing prostate tumor development.
The research, coming from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), focuses on a compound known as polysaccharopeptide (PSP), which is found in the turkey tail mushroom. For the study, two groups of mice were used, one of which was fed PSP for 20 weeks. What Dr. ling found was that mice fed the PSP over the 20 weeks did not develop any prostate tumors, whereas the group of mice not fed PSP did develop tumors.
Dr Ling, from the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre-Queensland and Institute for Biomedical Health & Innovation at QUT had this to say:
“The findings are quite significant. What we wanted to demonstrate was whether that compound could stop the development of prostate tumours in the first place. In the past, other inhibitors tested in research trials have been shown to be up to 70 per cent effective, but we’re seeing 100 per cent of this tumour prevented from developing with PSP. Importantly, we did not see any side effects from the treatment.”
While Lings research shows the potential for polysaccharopeptide to completely inhibit prostate tumor formation, he does note that his research doesn’t suggest that simply eating the mushrooms would have the same benefit.
Turkey Tail Mushroom and Breast Cancer
Of course the research doesn’t end there with the turkey tail mushroom. More recently, the mushroom was used by a cancer patient from Bastyr University. The breast cancer patient, Lisa Clinton, is just one of many individuals around the world who wholeheartedly believe that natural foods played a large role in her survival. After going through surgery, the ice skating competitor refused the extremely questionable cancer-treatment chemotherapy and turned to turkey tail instead to target her cancer.
“We consider cancer a failure of the immune system…When they [turkey tail] are ingested into the body, they stimulate immune cells that line the intestines, and then those stimulate other immune cells all over the body,” says Dr. Leanna Standish at Bastyr University.
If you’re looking to buy the turkey tail mushroom, take these tips into consideration:
- Buy certified organic.
- Look for turkey tail coming from skilled growers with skills in cultivation.
