Crohns disease is an inflammatory process in the digestive tract that can cause obstruction in the small or large intestines, ulcers or fistulas. About 95,000 people are diagnosed with Crohns in the U.K. and 2 million in North America.
At this time there is no conclusive evidence of the cause of Crohns and no known cure. There are some scientists who believe that it is an auto-immune response and others believe its a response to low stomach acid. Interestingly complications outside the intestines can occur such as inflammation in the eye and arthritis.
Patients will also experience remissions when they are symptom free and then other times when they experience relapses and symptoms flare. There are triggers to the flares that can be specific to each individual. Its important to understand and find your triggers so that you can avoid them.
Many people turn to natural remedies for Crohns disease so that they can avoid medications or if they cant afford the medications. Using natural remedies for Crohns disease also allows the body to heal itself more naturally which may decrease the number of relapses that you experience.
Diet is a critical factor to natural treatment. Many people find relief from Crohns disease when they avoid wheat, yeast and milk. Studies found that people who had a balance of Omega-3 fatty acids (fatty fish like salmon and trout or Flaxseed oil) and Omega-6 fatty acids such as corn or sesame seed oil were at less risk for developing Crohns and had a better chance of achieving remission as well.
Hemp oil is the most balanced oil containing Omega 3, 6, and 9. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has positive effects on the inflammatory process when taken each day, starting with one teaspoon and gradually increasing to a tablespoon.
Another problem with Crohns disease is the overgrowth of candida. This is a fungal overgrowth that can be caused by killing off the good bacteria in the gut using antibiotics and steroids. Candida is normally a harmless yeast in our bowel but when our immune systems are compromised it can cause overgrowth leading to distribution in the blood. This creates poor energy levels.
Two natural remedies for Crohns disease and the overgrowth of Candida are Zell Oxygen and Wormwood, both of which you can get at the health food store.
Other natural remedies for Crohns disease includes the use of a natural whole food diet that is high in fiber when you are in remission and a low fat, low residue diet when you have relapsed (having symptoms). Giving your body the nutrients it needs to heal itself is important to help heal the intestines from the inflammatory response. The Crohns disease doesnt disappear but when the intestines have less inflammatory response they are able to absorb nutrients better, have a low risk of obstruction, ulcers and fistulas and dont cause the person pain, cramping and diarrhea. All very good reasons to continue to follow a well-balanced and nutritious diet.
People who suffer from Crohns disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases should avoid milk, caffeine, high fat and highly processed foods. These foods also cause problems for the intestinal inflammatory response.
