Unless you are walking very quickly (less than 12 minute miles) and include a lot of steep hills, walking will never be much of a cardiovasc ular workout, and neither walking nor running do much for strength. Walking is certainly better than nothing, but high intensity cardio (in any form) and strength training are the way to go for the best overall results. Also, the latest research states that moderate distance running does not increase the risks of arthritis in the knees.
